Simoncelli receives threats before Catalunya GP
The Gresini Honda rider Marco Simoncelli’s safety is at risk in in Sunday's Catalunya MotoGP.
The news, which came from Spanish journalistic circles, was confirmed by Simoncelli’s team manager Fausto Gresini, according to which the Italian had received threats before the race to be held on the track at Montmeló, on the outskirts of Barcelona. Apparently some unruly Spanish fans did not care for the impetuousness shown on the track by Marco Simoncelli, who at the French GP with a rather risky manoeuvre caused the fall of Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa. He suffered a broken collarbone that required an operation. The Spanish press has pulled no punches, depicting the Italian rider as a dangerous element, and the sentiment has since spread to blogs and online forums, with a Facebook group that has even called for the withdrawal of Simoncelli’s racing license. Albert Puig, Pedrosa's manager, has even gone so far as to ask for a jail sentence.
THE BACKGROUND — The clash in Le Mans, for which Simoncelli was also criticised by his friend Valentino Rossi – "For me, this time Simoncelli was [riding] too hard" – also brought statements from other riders, including Lorenzo and Stoner, who called the Italian’s racing "too aggressive". Before the ‘nasty incident’ they even asked for the establishment of a code for passing on the track. Despite the fact that Simoncelli was given a ride-through penalty at the French GP for his actions, the FIM announced that the race management will summon him for another hearing before the race in Montmeló, with a delay of ‘only’ three weeks after the event. Tardy judicial procedures, threats and a heavy atmosphere; let us hope that, on and off the track at the Catalunya MotoGP, common sense will prevail.
