Clijsters forced to withdraw from Wimbledon
Women's second seed Kim Clijsters has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon due to injury.
Clijsters, who has made the semi-finals at the All England Club twice in her career but never progressed further than that, was dumped out in the second round of a warm-up event in the Netherlands on Monday, losing 7-6(5) 6-3 to world No. 82 Romina Oprandi.
The Belgian admitted afterwards that she had aggravated an ankle injury she first picked up in April after falling early in her match with Oprandi, and the reoccurrence of that injury has now forced her to miss the third grand slam of the year.
"I'm very very disappointed to have to withdraw from Wimbledon after injuring my foot again at the tournament in 'S Hertogenbosch," Clijsters said in a statement. "At this moment I feel frustrated that it has to happen now before one of my favourite tournaments.
"I've always enjoyed being a part of the Wimbledon atmosphere but I have no other choice now but to rest, recover and to not play tennis for a few weeks."
The world No. 2 started 2011 in great form with victory at the Australian Open, but was knocked out of the French Open at Roland Garros in the second round last month.
The 28-year-old initially suffered the injury after dancing barefoot at her cousin's wedding.
