Nadal fit to play, MRI shows no serious injury
Defending Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal will not withdraw from Wimbledon after an MRI scan showed no serious injury to his left foot.
The Spaniard thought he had suffered a serious problem during his fourth round match against Juan Martin del Potro on Monday evening, but nevertheless managed to get past the Argentine in four sets to continue into the last eight.
He went for a scan afterwards to try and uncover the extent of the problem but, after getting a positive verdict from doctors, will now practise on Tuesday ahead of his quarter-final contest against Mardy Fish the following day.
"Good morning everybody," Nadal wrote on his Facebook page. "Yesterday after the match I went to take an MRI at a London hospital. During the match I thought I had something serious but as the match went through the pain got better and thankfully the tests don't show an injury.
"Today I will practice at 4.30 pm and I'll play tomorrow. Thanks all for the support."
In the immediate aftermath of his win over Del Potro, a dejected Nadal had been worried he would be forced to withdraw from the event . "At some point I felt a lot of pain, like if something had broken," Nadal told The Times. "I almost cried of pain and of thinking I could have really gotten injured.
"I am checking with the doctors, with the physios. We are trying to do our best as fast as possible. Let's see what's going on and let's see how the MRI looks.
"And after, let's see if we have the chance to recover for Wednesday. I don't know."
