Serena Williams makes brilliant US Open return
Serena Williams made light work of her opening round match at the US Open, swatting aside Bojana Jovanovski 6-1 6-1.
Williams, playing in her first match at Flushing Meadows since her 2009 meltdown in which she lost to Kim Clijsters, showed the strength and aggression which has taken her to the very top of the women's game. The American never allowed her 54th-ranked opponent into the match.
Indeed, the dominance of the 28th seed commenced from the outset, as Williams claimed the opening three games of the first set with ease. Jovanovski, in fact, provided little resistance thereafter, although did manage to at least pick up one game in each set to avoid complete embarrassment.
The hard, flat hitting of Williams continued in the second set, as the 13-time grand slam winner went on to launch 22 winners in the contest. Her Serbian opponent, however, appeared to lack any genuine firepower, and won a timid 20 points on her own serve.
Following this near flawless performance, Williams will face Michaella Krajicek who overcame Eleni Daniilidou in three sets.
