Serie A season set to go ahead
A second weekend of strike action in Serie A has been averted after the Italian Players' Union (AIC) and the Lega Serie A reached a resolution on a temporary collective contract.
Both parties signed the document to last until the end of the 2011-12 campaign. The announcment means the new Serie A season will kick-off on Friday as defending champions AC Milan take on Lazio at the San Siro.
The dispute between the League and the AIC over the new collective bargaining agreement had postponed the opening weekend of the campaign.
Reflecting on the agreement, Lega president Maurizio Beretta said: "The clubs have received a lot of what they were wanting. It's an innovative agreement."
AIC chief Damiano Tommasi added: "We'll play. You have to credit the players for the good sense they have shown in these talks. If, as Beretta says, the clubs have received a lot, then there won't be a need to discuss too much when it comes to the new deal which will be required once the interim one expires."
