Riddle # 213 (Solved By dangerous tears)

Three sailors – expert thugs – went to an islet to steal some coconuts. Having reached there by evening, they plucked many coconut shells and heaped them under a tree on which lived a monkey. Tired by the toil of plucking the coconut shells they soon fell into deep slumber. But since all were thugs they couldn’t rely on each other’s noble, intentions. Soon, one sailor got up. He divided the heap of coconuts into three equal parts which had one shell as the remainder since the total was not divisible by three. That coconut shell he tossed up to the monkey on the tree. After securing his share in a secret place he went to sleep. After some time the second sailor got up and since he had no idea that some coconut shells have been slashed away, he divided the remaining heap into three equal parts. Again the number was not divisible by three as one coconut shell was in excess which he tossed up to the monkey and hid his share.
After he fell asleep the third sailor got up, unaware of all the previous happenings and performed the same operations. This time too the number of the shells in the heap was not divisible by three. Again, after giving one shell to the monkey, he take divided the heap into three equal parts and hid his share securely. In the morning when all the three got up, they found the heap considerably reduced but no one gust to question about it, they tired to divide the number of the remaining shells into three equal parts, which they could do after tossing up one coconut to the monkey. After securing their share of the coconut shells they sailed back home in different boats.
