Manchester City fail in appeal over Kompany red
Manchester City will be without their captain Vincent Kompany for four matches after failing to have his red card overturned.
Kompany was given his marching orders just nine minutes into City's FA Cup third round defeat to Manchester United on Sunday after a two-footed challenge on United winger Nani.
City manager Roberto Mancini accused Wayne Rooney of influencing referee Chris Foy's decision, but the Football Association has upheld the original decision.
A statement on the FA website said: "An Independent Regulatory Commission has today dismissed a claim of wrongful dismissal from Manchester City's Vincent Kompany following his red card for serious foul play in The FA Cup third round tie between Manchester City v Manchester United on 8 January 2012.
"Kompany will serve a four-match suspension with immediate effect. The suspension consists of a statutory three-match suspension for serious foul play plus one additional game given this is Kompany's second dismissal of the season."
