Pakistan's spinners pose threat - De Mel

141548 - Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel has said the Sri Lanka batsmen should to be wary of the two Pakistan spinners, Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman, during the upcoming Twenty20, ODI and Test series.

"It is the Pakistani spinners we need to be careful of. Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman are of a different class compared to our spinners. Only Rangana Herath comes anywhere close to them," De Mel said.

Offspinner Ajmal and left-arm spinner Rehman have been at the forefront of Pakistan's recent successes. The pair took 43 wickets in Pakistan's 3-0 win over No. 1 ranked England in their last Test series played in the UAE early this year. Ajmal was also the leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets during Sri Lanka's three-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE last year.

"The advantage the Pakistan team has is that it also has batsmen who can be useful bowlers, for instance opener Mohammad Hafeez, who can bowl offbreaks," he said. "This adds a lot of variety to their attack and balances their team nicely.

"Their fast bowlers are quite effective with the reverse swing. That's another area our batsmen have got to be wary of. Pakistan have mastered the art of reverse swing from the era of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Umar Gul and left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan are very good at using the old ball."

A former fast bowler himself, De Mel said Sri Lanka's fast bowlers need to develop their skills to master reverse swing, an art that needs a lot of practice to be perfected.

Recollecting Sri Lanka's last Test series against England at home which ended in a 1-1 draw, De Mel said the batsmen needed to put up 400-plus totals in the first innings if Sri Lanka are to have any chance of winning. Sri Lanka's highest total in that series was 318 in the Galle Test and they failed to go past the 300-run mark in the Colombo Test.

"At least three of the top five batsmen need to get a big score if we are to come up with competitive totals. Off the middle-order, two of the three most experienced batsmen must score runs," De Mel said, referring to the trio of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera who have a combined tally of 25,001 runs and 73 hundreds in Tests.

De Mel admitted the middle order had been put under pressure due to the poor starts provided by the openers. Sri Lanka tried Tharanga Paranavitana and Lahiru Thirimanne as opening partners with Tillakaratne Dilshan in the series against South Africa and England, but none of them were able to settle into the role.

"I don't think Thirimanne is an opener. He is good in the middle order. We persisted with him because the previous selection committee had picked him as an opener and we wanted to give Thirimanne a fair chance to prove himself. We are thinking of bringing back Paranavitana to open with Dilshan."

Thirimanne, who has been named in Sri Lanka's Twenty20 and ODI squads, bats in the middle order in the shorter versions, but is unlikely to be named in the Test squad. In seven Tests in which he has opened the batting, he has only gone past 50 once.

When questioned why former Test opener Upul Tharanga is not being considered for the position, De Mel said, "Upul's technique against the new ball is suspect. He is playing well away from his body and that is why we have decided to bring him down the order in the ODIs and play him in the middle where he has contributed.

"There's, at present, a paucity of quality opening batsmen in the country. We are looking at Dimuth Karunaratne as an opener for the Sri Lanka A tour to South Africa and also wicketkeeper Kushal Janith Perera, who bats at No. 3, as an opener in the limited-overs version."

The Sri Lanka A team is due to tour South Africa and Zimbabwe next month.

Another youngster Dinesh Chandimal is likely to be named in the Test squad but will find it difficult to make it into a line-up that comprises Dilshan, Paranavitana, Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene. De Mel added Mathews would be picked purely as a batsman and may bowl occasionally.

"Our bowlers are not penetrative enough. To win a Test you need to take 20 wickets. What I have observed about our quick bowlers is that they come at you initially around 135 [kph] but are about ten kilometers (per hour) slower when they return for their second spell. The four to five bowlers in the line-up should all contribute to take wickets."

Predicting a close contest during the Test series, De Mel said the pitches used would play a key role. "The side that performs on the day will hold the advantage. I hope we get some decent wickets with some bounce. We make slow and low wickets and end up losing. The P Sara Oval wicket (where Sri Lanka lost to England) was slow and low and lacked bounce."

Sri Lanka and Pakistan play two Twenty20 matches before the ODIs and Tests. De Mel said the selectors had picked the 14-member squad for the two Twenty20s in Hambantota with an eye on the forthcoming World Twenty20 (which will be hosted by Sri Lanka in September).

"We have picked Isuru Udana who is a specialist Twenty20 bowler and legspinning all-rounder Kaushal Lokuarachchi whom we think can be useful in the shorter version."

De Mel said that apart from spinner Ajantha Mendis, who is still recuperating from a back injury and was not considered for selection, Farvez Maharoof and Suranga Lakmal were left out because Nuwan Pradeep and Dilhara Fernando were declared fit.

Saeed Ajmal not keen on developing new variations

141841 - Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka

Saeed Ajmal is known for his straight talk and has a tendency to make big, carefree declarations at press conferences. On Saturday though, which was the last day of Pakistan's preparatory camp in Lahore, he was rather cautious while fielding the media's questions. On the tour of Sri Lanka, he said, he will look to keep things 'simple'.

Does he have another new delivery to unveil, following the 'teesra' that he dished out against England in the UAE earlier this year? "There is no need to introduce any new delivery, let us keep things simple," Ajmal said. "Mastering any new delivery takes time and a lot of work is involved in it. With more varieties, more complications are created [for the bowler]. So I would like to just take control of my conventional spin, which is giving me results."

For now, Ajmal said, he is focussing on just bowling at his best and displacing South Africa's Dale Steyn as the world's No. 1 Test bowler. "Presently my focus is to win the series [in Sri Lanka] for Pakistan. The goal is to archive the No. 1 spot [on the rankings], for that I am putting in a lot of hard work."

Ajmal did not have much of an impact the previous time Pakistan played in Sri Lanka, as the visitors went on to lose both the Tests and ODIs. This time, Ajmal is looking to compensate for that below-par showing. "Things are going in my way [recently], I will try to extend my recent form. I am ready to take on the Sri Lanka challenge once again."

"My body is fully fit and ready to cope the heat [in Sri Lanka], and I know onus will be on the spinners. We[spinners] have to bowl more overs than the fast bowlers because of the heat. But I think we have fast bowlers who can provide a breakthrough even in shorter spells, and they will be equally important. [Abdur] Rehman I make a good pair, and we are ready to bowl longer spells."

While wary of the likes of Thilan Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara, Ajmal said Pakistan is quite confident. "We have been practicing assuming that we will be playing on batting [batsmen-friendly] pitches there. We have been doing well for quite a long time now, so I don't think plans will be difficult for us to execute. They have got some good batsman like Sanga and Samaraweera, who had scored runs against us the last time in the UAE, but we still produced good results against them."

Recent record gives Pakistan edge over Sri Lanka - Misbah

143558 - Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan's Test and ODI captain, has said that his team's recent record against Sri Lanka gives it the edge leading into the tour slated for June and July.

"Sri Lanka is always a difficult team to play against, especially in their back yard," Misbah said on the sidelines of Pakistan's preparatory camp in Lahore. "Obviously we have to be at our best in all departments, because they always come hard at the opposition. But our record against them gives us the upper hand, and our confidence level is high."

In their last series against Sri Lanka, in the UAE in October-November 2011, Pakistan won in all three formats. In the three-Test series, they won 1-0, took the ODIs 4-1 and won the one-off Twenty20. They also beat Sri Lanka in the one game the teams played against each other in the Asia Cup in March. However, the previous time the two teams played in Sri Lanka, Pakistan lost the Tests 2-0 and the one-dayers 3-2.

Misbah said Pakistan's improvements on the fielding and fitness fronts would help them this time around. "I think we have shown a lot of improvement in fielding and fitness in last couple of years," he said. "Every coach in the past, whether it was Waqar Younis and Ijaz Ahmed, everyone did a good job [with those disciplines] and now Julien [Fountain, the fielding coach] is doing a great job."

For the Sri Lanka tour, Pakistan have picked specialist players in each format, meaning Misbah has missed out in the Twenty20 squad, and the captaincy was handed over to Mohammad Hafeez. Misbah reiterated that he will be available in the shortest format, should Pakistan require him.

"It [Twenty20] is a format that is widely played in the world and I will keep on playing it," he said. "As far as [ending] my international career is concerned, I think that decision has to be taken by the PCB."

"Obviously the burden on me has been eased, and I can now focus on two formats. But if you are enjoying playing cricket, you can easily cope with it [playing all three formats too]."

Sri Lanka recall Jeevan Mendis, Fernando

Sri Lanka have recalled allrounder Jeevan Mendis and seamer Dilhara Fernando to their ODI squad for the home series against Pakistan starting in June. Also included in the squad is fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, who toured South Africa late last year with the national team but had to head back home due to a hamstring tear. Rangana Herath, who didn't play in the Asia Cup, is back as well while allrounder Farveez Maharoof and Ajantha Mendis do not find a place.

Jeevan Mendis, who also bowls leg-spin, has played 19 ODIs for Sri Lanka, picking up 14 wickets and averaging 19.18 with the bat. He last played for them in the ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE in November 2011. Since then he's played on the domestic circuit, representing Tamil Union, chipping in with handy contributions in the middle order and taking wickets in all three formats.

Pradeep hasn't played an ODI for Sri Lanka but went wicketless in his only Test, against Pakistan last year. After having to leave from the tour of South Africa, he had a three-month lay-off. Returning to domestic cricket in March this year, he's played a first-class game and three Twenty20s.

Fernando played two Tests and an ODI on the tour of South Africa and was named in the provisional squad of 30 for the upcoming series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Ajantha Mendis, who was part of that squad, has also been left out. Ajantha Mendis hasn't played competitive cricket since January following a back injury.

Sri Lanka play two Twenty20 internationals, five ODIs and three Tests against Pakistan. For the Twenty20s, they brought back left-arm seamer Isuru Udana - who last played for the national team in the 2009 World Twenty20 - and legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who hasn't played for the national side since 2007.

Preview: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan T20 series preview

Two most exciting Rockstars of Twenty-20 cricket – Pakistan and Sri Lanka all set to bare temper of another fascinating series. Sri Lanka who will be hosting Pakistan this time are looking charged up after decent IPL performances whereas Pakistan has previous records to keep their confidence on a high.

    News:

    Pakistan camp:
Pakistan has arrived in Sri Lankan with a team full of riches in almost all the sectors. They have recently announced a new captain for T20I and that is Mohammad Hafeez. All eyes will be on Mohammad Hafeez’s captaincy. Maintaining the team unity will be his biggest challenge.

After a decent show in BPL and Pakistan’s domestic T20 leagues, Mohammad Sami has made a comeback in the side. The kind of form Sami exhibited it is expected that he will add extra energy to this Pakistani attack. In the batting department, some fresh blood has been injected for the sake of upcoming World Cup.

It’s the bowling that is Pakistan’s strength with batting being unpredictable and the fragile fielding is the biggest worry for Pakistan. If Pakistan doesn’t grab the crucial catches when needed, if they don’t control their habit of mis-fieldings then they might be counting the stars in the sky rather than celebrating a series win.

    Sri Lankan camp:
After Mahela Jayawardene returning as Sri Lanka’s captain, the Lankan camp seems a different unit – full of confidence and bustling with energy. Like Pakistan they have enough fuel in the bowling department and their advantage over Pakistan is solidity in the batting department and a fielding unit who are habituated to make half-chances into full chances.

Like Pakistan, Sri Lanka too has injected young guns in the squad keeping in mind the up coming T20 World Cup. The return of Lasith Malinga will ensure exhibition of lethal yorkers while the charismatic Dilshan’s coming back in form is a huge bonus while the ever massive presence of Jayawardene and Sangakkara in the batting order gives Sri Lankan batting huge boast.

With soundness in all departments, Sri Lanka has the edge over Pakistan.

    Playing conditions:
As in sub-continent, it’s bright sunshine in progress; except sweat from players’ head there won’t be any chance of water marks. And the track at Hambantota will be a batting beauty. Plenty of battering for the bowlers is expected but quality bowlers will rip a good harvest.

    Head to Head:
For Pakistan three of their premium bowlers (Ajmal-Afridi-Gul) share 162 T20-career wickets within 9 four wickets and 1 five wickets haul. That’s quite competitive than Lankan’s batting trinity (Mahela-Dilshan-Sangakkara) with 2730 career runs among them including two centuries and 17 half-centuries.

    Crunching numbers:

    Ground Trivia:

    > Hambantota will make its T20 debut today.

    > Out of 4 ODI matches played here Sri Lanka has won twice while Pakistan has won once.

    > 3 out of 4 times team batting first have registered a win.

    Match results:

    > 5 out of 7 times Pakistan have registered comprehensive win over Sri Lanka.

    > Lowest total: 120 runs (18.1 overs) by Sri Lanka in August 2009

    > Higest total: 189/6 (20 overs) by Pakistan in September 2007.

    Top scorers:
Kumar Sangakkara 144 runs in 5 matches for Sri Lanka while Shoaib Malik 186 runs in 7 matches for Pakistan.

    Top strikers:
Lasith Malinga 8 wickets in 5 matches while Umer Gul 12 wickets in 7 matches.

    Individual achievements:
    > Dilshan and Mahela being the only players to hold a century amongst these two teams.

    > Mahela is 47 runs away to reach 1000 T20I runs.

    > Umer Gul is the only bowler to notch up a 5-wicket haul.

    Quotes:

“We had a pretty decent two weeks before we came here, finishing up with some practices that were attended by conservatively 15,000 people who have starved for cricket and they just loved them.”
    Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore.

“What makes them competitive is the sort of bowling options available, apart from the specialists.”
    Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene.
