    Bangladesh face uphill task

    Big Picture
Pakistan began their World Twenty20 campaign with success, after being made to wait for five days, beating New Zealand by 13 runs. But they looked a better side than the margin suggested; it was narrowed thanks to a late, and failed, onslaught by Ross Taylor.
Their opponents, Bangladesh, who were beaten convincingly by New Zealand in their first game, can only hope to qualify for the Super Eights if they beat Pakistan by a sizeable margin. Bangladesh need to win by more than 36 runs to finish with a higher net run-rate than Pakistan. In the event that they win by exactly 36 runs, the net run-rates will be the same, in which case the balls-per-wicket taken will be the differentiator. Should Bangladesh be chasing, their net run-rate requirement will depend on the target set. For instance, if they're chasing 150, they'll have to score those runs in 15.4 overs or quicker. On current form, it seems like a struggle for Bangladesh.
Pakistan have the best bowling line-up and their fielding is in good shape with Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal patrolling the hitting zones. Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez are a threat to Bangladesh's left-handers at the top of the order. Both Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan are good players and will be expected to bounce back strongly. The middle order is a capable one, comprising Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain.
Bangladesh's bowling remains a worry, with Shakib and Tamim having said after the game against New Zealand that spinners would require some help from the conditions. Mushfiqur's captaincy will also be tested in a game in which his team is the underdog, but is expected to produce a much-improved performance.

    Watch out for
Nasir Jamshed has already made a mark, but he also knows the Bangladesh team well, having played in the Dhaka Premier League for three seasons, including the most recent one. He played in the Bangladesh Premier League for Chittagong Kings, and his performance for them contributed to his selection in the Pakistan side. The shot that stood out during his half-century against New Zealand was the lofted drive over extra cover. He did it twice against Nathan McCullum, and it's something Bangladesh's spinners will watch out for.
Shakib Al Hasan will be one of them. His four overs will again be crucial for Bangladesh, as will his role with the bat at No 3. New Zealand was a bad outing for Shakib, who has the ability to fight back in the only way he knows: runs and wickets.

    Team news
Pakistan left out Mohammad Sami and Abdul Razzaq for the opening game. It'll be interesting to see if one of them gets a go, with qualification not yet secured.
Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Yasir Arafat, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal.
Mashrafe Mortaza injured his shin during practice, but is confident of recovering for the game. Having been clobbered for 117 runs in 12 overs, the Bangladesh spinners would, presumably, not be very high on confidence. Mushfiqur and coach Richard Pybus have a decision to make about who, if at all, to leave out. Mushfiqur said at the pre-match conference that Bangladesh could consider going in with an extra seamer.
There is a possibility that Abul Hasan could replace left-arm spinner Elias Sunny or fellow seamer Shafiul Islam, depending on what the team management believes is the right bowling combination. However, any tweaks in the batting line-up are unlikely.
Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Mohammad Ashraful, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Ziaur Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Elias Sunny/Abul Hasan, 11 Shafiul Islam.

    Pitch and conditions
The pitch is again likely to favour batting but the seamers can expect some movement after sunset. Group D has been unaffected by rain so far. On Tuesday, the forecast is for clear skies.

    Stats and trivia

    • Sohail Tanvir still hasn't been dismissed for a duck in his T20 international career, having played 10 innings in 24 games so far.
    • Nasir Hossain, Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful are the only batsmen in the Bangladesh team to have scored two half-centuries in T20 internationals.

    Quotes
"Pakistan are world class in all sectors and they have a Twenty20 pedigree in abundance. However, no team is unbeatable in this format. We have to be at our best and hope that best is good enough on the day."
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal puts up a brave face.
"We are not thinking as if we have already qualified [for the Super Eights]. We have to play well against Bangladesh. On certain days in T20, anybody can win. We are not going to take any one easy."
Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan captain, doesn't want his team to be complacent

Anti-Western protests grip Sri Lanka amid World T20

Sri Lanka's police barricaded the US embassy in Colombo for the second time in four days on Monday as thousands of Muslims gathered to denounce an anti-Islam film which has sparked protests worldwide.
An estimated 20,000 people carrying anti-US and anti-Semitic placards marched towards the embassy during heightened security for the World Twenty20 cricket tournament hosted by Sri Lanka.
A ruling party stalwart, Alavi Moulana, was seen among the Muslims taking part in the orderly and peaceful demonstration that blocked traffic for several hours.
"Dear Muslims around the world, stop purchasing Jewish products such as Coca Cola, KFC, McDonald's, Pepsi, Fanta, Pizza Hut, You Tube, D and G etc," said a banner carried by protesters.
"Who is behind the film? Jews," said another anti-semitic placard carried by the demonstrators.
The anti-Islam film has been produced by, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, reportedly a 55-year-old Egyptian Copt and convicted fraudster, based in Los Angeles and currently out on parole.
The US government has also denounced the anti-Islam film, "Innocence of Muslims" that has triggered violent protests around the world since September 11.
Sri Lanka, mainly a Buddhist country, has a small minority of Muslims among its 20 million population.
Government-backed activists had staged a similar demonstration outside the US embassy earlier this year protesting Washington's move to pass a resolution against Colombo at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa stepped up an anti-US drive by calling for a boycott of US products and services, including the Google search engine.
The US has called for investigations into alleged killings of thousands of civilians in the final phase of Sri Lanka's Tamil separatist war in 2009, but Colombo has insisted that there were no rights abuses by its troops.
On Monday, police blocked the road opposite the US embassy which also leads to several hotels where foreign cricket teams are staying.
President Mahinda Rajapakse's tightly-guarded residence is also in the same neighbourhood.
Monday's demonstrators held a prayer session outside the US embassy barricades before dispersing peacefully. There was a smaller protest there on Friday.
A top official involved in providing security for visiting cricket teams said they were closely monitoring anti-Western demonstrations, but there were no signs of any violence.
"Most of the protesters had been bussed in from the provinces today. It is not a violent crowd and we don't see any threat to the teams or the match venues," the official said asking not to be named.
Sri Lanka is providing tight security to the 11 foreign teams taking part in the World Twenty20 tournament which opened on September 18 and ends on October 7 with the finals played in Colombo.

Bangladesh seek Pakistani help to tackle Ajmal

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said feedback from former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will help counter Saeed Ajmal in their do-or-die clash against Pakistan on Tuesday.
Bangladesh need a big win over the 2009 champions in their final group D match to advance to the Super Eights round but Ajmal’s danger looms large after the off-spinner took 4-30 in Pakistan’s 13-run win over New Zealand on Sunday.
New Zealand, who have already qualified for Super Eights, beat Bangladesh by 59 runs in the opening group match. The top two teams from the group qualify for the Super Eights.
Saqlain regarded as the inventor of “doosra” – off-spinner’s stock delivery which turns the other way and is mastered by Ajmal – is currently serving as Bangladesh’s bowling coach.
“Ajmal is a world class bowler but we have taken help from Saqlain who is very experienced but we have to execute our plans on the field and it’s a do-or-die match for us but Pakistan is not unbeatable if we play well,” said Rahim.
Ajmal is the leading wicket taker in Twenty20 internationals with 64 and his wicket taking ability poses a real challenge for Bangladesh, who have lost all their five matches in this shortest format against Pakistan.
“Playing Pakistan is a big challenge because their bowling is good but we want to put up our best to qualify for the next round,” said Rahim, whose team only reached the second round in the inaugural World Twenty20 held in South Africa in 2007.
Since then Bangladesh have lost nine consecutive matches in World Twenty20 editions.
Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez said he feels blessed with a varied bowling attack, led by Ajmal.
“What else can you want when you have such a variety in your bowling attack,” said Hafeez, who along with Ajmal and Shahid Afridi holds spin responsibilities, with rookie left-armer Raza Hasan in reserves.
“As a captain it is a blessing for me. This is something I am very pleased to have that I have so many options in bowling and whenever I throw the ball to any of my bowlers he is ready to bowl,” said Hafeez.
Hafeez, however, said Bangladesh will not be taken lightly.
“We are not thinking that we have already qualified, we have to win against Bangladesh. They have lost their first match so they will come down hard on us. We are not going to take Bangladesh lightly,” said Hafeez.

Bamboozled England desperate to cope with spin

England are desperate to find a way to tackle spin after their biggest loss in T20 cricket.

India s spinners sent Stuart Broad s men packing for just 80 in Sunday s group A match in Colombo, a defeat of 90 runs. It was England s lowest total in the shortest format and their heaviest defeat.

Luckily for England, the capitulation came in a match of no consequence in terms of the tournament since both teams had qualified for the Super Eights stage after knocking minnows Afghanistan out.

But the holders failure to deal with spin will be of great concern to Broad, who attempted to play down the embarrassing loss.

"Any international defeat is really frustrating, especially when you put in a performance like that," Broad said.

"But it does not change our destiny a huge amount. Knowing that it does not change anything really -- apart from us having to maybe face a few more spinners in the nets -- is nice."

Broad also brushed aside suggestions that the team missed their best player of spin bowling -- axed batsman Kevin Pietersen, who is in Colombo but only as a studio expert for the host broadcaster.

"We ve got these 15 guys here, and we ve known that all along," the England captain said. "We did not perform well with the bat, but we did in the last three or four games.

"It s important we focus on what we did well in those games and learn from what we did wrong against India."

England will travel to Pallekele for the Super Eights round starting on Thursday, where they are grouped with hosts Sri Lanka, New Zealand and either Ireland or the West Indies.

The collapse against spin also does not bode well for England beyond Sri Lanka -- they begin a four-Test series in India next month.
For India, veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh marked his return to the team after a year with 4-12 and leg-spinner Piyush Chawla took 2-13.
At 60-9, England were in danger of falling below the smallest total ever in T20 internationals -- 67 by Kenya against Ireland in 2008 -- but the last-wicket pair of Steven Finn and Jade Dernbach prevented that humiliation.

Broad admitted his team was "a little bit sloppy" in allowing India to pile up 170-4 on the back of a half-century from Rohit Sharma and useful contributions from Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

"We could have maybe held India to a slightly lower score," he said. "But we thought it was very chaseable. The wicket was pretty flat, it did not have pace in it."

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose team endured a 4-0 Test series defeat in England last year on seaming wickets, sympathised with England s woes against spin.

"It is something that is a bit new and different to them," he said. "In the sub-continent when the wickets start turning, you have to be really careful when playing drives.

"But they are a very good side that has done really well in the last year. So you will see them adapt to conditions and get better in the future."
