Pakistan: More lucky than good

There could be many explanations for what happened at Premadasa on Friday evening. Pakistan bowled themselves into a position of strength by restricting South Africa to 133 only to crash to 76-7 after making a reasonable start to the run-chase.

And when all hope seemed lost, Umar Gul smashed a career-best 32 with three towering sixes to propel Pakistan to a vital two-wicket win. Gul’s blitz could be seen as a fluke or even as a miracle. It could also be seen as a heroic effort from a bowler, who was itching to make his presence felt in the match after failing to get ample opportunity with the ball.

Inevitably, the result once again underlined South Africa’s tag as the perennial chokers of world cricket. AB de Villiers and his men bounced back from a tough corner to come within striking distance of victory. But like so many occasions in the past, they snatched defeat from jaws of victory by allowing themselves to get ‘Gul-dozed’ in the death overs.

Pakistan can take several positives from the narrow win. Firstly, they have earned full points from a game against the top-ranked team in the world. The result puts them in a commanding position ahead of Sunday’s mouth-watering clash against India. A win against their old rivals would catapult Pakistan in the World Twenty20 semifinals, making it four in a row for the Green-shirts.

Their spin arsenal is regarded as the best in the tournament and Pakistan showed why by just toying with South Africa’s formidable batting line-up. Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez and the young Raza Hasan bowled a total of 15 overs for just 87 runs. That’s less than six an over. It was a mighty show of strength and should add to Pakistan’s confidence.

The fact that the young Umar Akmal finished the match for Pakistan also comes as a relief for their fans. Umar’s unbeaten 43 may have been overshadowed a bit by Gul’s knock but it was equally important for Pakistan.

But let’s be frank. Pakistan did win but they were far from convincing. Their bowlers were impressive but the fielders were once again sloppy. Later, they almost made a mess of what should have been a comfortable chase. Needing just around 6.5 per over on a wicket that offered precious little to the pace-dominated South African attack, Pakistan should have made it look like a cakewalk. But they made it seem as if was mission impossible.

Most of our batsmen were guilty of throwing away their wickets. Just when it seemed that Imran Nazir has finally learned to value his wicket, the opener just blew it away. Mohammad Hafeez hit Robin Peterson for a six first ball only to lose his wicket off the next one. Nasir Jamshed and Kamran Akmal also just threw away their wickets. Shahid Afridi didn’t help his cause by falling for a golden duck at a time when Pakistan desperately needed him to stay there.

Pakistan’s next game is against India, a side that might not be as vulnerable against spin as most of the other teams in this competition. So far, Pakistan have won all their three previous games. But the unblemished run shouldn’t fool Hafeez and his men. They have been more lucky than good so far.

Sehwag raises questions by skipping net session again

The Indian team's way of handling senior opener Virender Sehwag and the player's own attitude in this ongoing World Twenty20 is certain to raise questions whether all is well in the Indian camp.

On the eve of the high-voltage match against arch-rivals Pakistan, Sehwag was again seen skipping the entire net session although he did participate in a football game.

While skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli also did not bat during the hour and half net session having played Friday's match, it was inexplicable to watch Sehwag relax and enjoy a chit-chat with other team members when serious questions are being raised about his form and commitment in the shortest format.

During the afternoon training session, the Indians enjoyed their game of soccer for close to 75 minutes - a lengthier session by their standards. Sehwag was goalkeeper of one team and played the entire duration.

Finally, when the net session started, it was again Irfan Pathan who was all padded up and had the first hit in one of the two nets.

The fact that Pathan, who scored 31 off 30 balls against Australia, batted first in the batting session is seen as an indication that he may again open against Pakistan.

Skipper Dhoni has always had a penchant of bowling 'wrong one' to Indian media and it won't be a surprise if Sehwag walks alongside Gautam Gambhir against Pakistan as Irfan Pathan's technique was not good enough for handling a crafty bowler like Umar Gul.

However one expected Sehwag to have a decent hit at the nets when likes of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Gambhir all looked serious during the session.

Sehwag was seen present in a melee chatting in a relaxed manner with Dhoni and Kohli. While Dhoni and Kohli had a reason not to bat, Sehwag, if he is fit (as claimed by team management) had no reason not to bat at all.

World T20's over the years have not been a happy experience for the 'Nawab of Najafgarh'. Even during India's victorious campaign in the 2007 edition, Sehwag missed the final giving Yusuf Pathan a chance to make his international debut.

During 2009 edition in England, there was a huge controversy as to whether the opener had carried an injury into the tournament which led to skipper Dhoni marching in with the entire team to read out a press statement.

In the 2010 edition in West Indies, Sehwag missed the entire tournament with an injury as India went in with Murali Vijay.

The 2012 edition is also turning out to be an unhappy one for him and it only depends on Sehwag to change the current script.
