Renowned playback singer Asha Bhosle’s daughter Varsha Bhosle committed suicide in Mumbai after shooting herself with a revolver at her home in south Mumbai, police said.
Varsha, a singer and columnist, who was in her mid 50s, had attempted suicide earlier on at least two occasions, they said.
In 2008, she had attempted suicide by consuming overdose of sleeping pills after which she was admitted to Jaslok hospital in Mumbai on September 9.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead, they said. The body would be taken to J J Hospital for post mortem, the sources said.
Divorcee Varsha was married to sports writer Hemant Kenkre. She was a free-lance journalist. The second of Asha’s three children, Varsha, had worked as a columnist for The Sunday Observer between 1994 and 1998 and at Rediff between 1997 and 2003.
Asha Bhosle is currently in Singapore to attend MIFTA awards (Marathi Culture awards).
She had also worked as a playback singer in Hindi and Marathi movies, and appeared in concerts with her mother. She also used to write columns for web portals and magazines.
