The biggest chase in one-day history was by South Africa, who made 438-9 to defeat Australia at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on March 12, 2006.
Earlier, Virender Sehwag smashed 146 off 102 balls on a ground with shorter boundaries as India surpassed their previous one-day record of 413-5 against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Sri Lanka made a spectacular chase of the daunting target as Dilshan and Upul Tharanga (67) hammered 188 for the first wicket in 24 overs.
Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara propelled Sri Lanka further with a blistering 90 off 43 balls that contained 10 fours and five sixes.

Dhoni, who had reprieves on 49 and 94, shared in a 51-runstand with Kohli before the latter was Randiv''s first victim.
Raina fell in the 47th over, giving paceman Angelo Mathews the charge and Dhoni was dismissed in the last over to Randiv, who then had Harbhajan Singh stumped for a duck off the last ball of the innings.
The tourists were cruising at 213 for two when left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra yorked Dilshan.

CUTTACK: Sachin Tendulkar hit a solid 96 not out to power India to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the third one-day international here on Monday.
The opener cracked 13 fours in his 104-ball knock to help India achieve a 240-run target with more than seven overs to spare in the day-night game for a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role in restricting Sri Lanka to a modest total, finishing with a career-best 4-32 off 10 tight overs. He was named man of the match.
Sri Lanka were on course for a big total when they reached 165-1 in the 23rd over before losing their last nine wickets for 74 in a dramatic collapse, sparked by Jadeja.
India made a brisk start, with stand-in captain Virender Sehwag smashing a 28-ball 44 with nine fours in a 55-run stand for the opening wicket with Tendulkar.
Sehwag led the team in the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was banned for two matches for a slow over-rate during his team''s three-wicket defeat in the previous game in Nagpur.
India capitalised on the start as Tendulkar added 72 for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (32) and 73 for the unfinished fourth wicket with Dinesh Karthik (36 not out) to steer his team home.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was the other bowler to impress, conceding 29 off nine overs for one wicket.
In-form opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who smashed brisk centuries in the last two matches, helped Sri Lanka get off to an explosive start with an 18-ball 41 as the visitors raced to 65 off just 6.2 overs.
Dilshan, who survived a run-out chance on 36, was caught by wicket-keeper Karthik off a mistimed pull off seamer Ashish Nehra after hitting 10 fours in his impressive cameo.

Sanath Jayasuriya was also dismissed cheaply, for just 15, when he was caught by Tendulkar off Zaheer Khan, before Sangakkara came in to steady the ship.
Together with Tharanga, Sri Lanka''s captain put on 126 for the third wicket before Sangakkara was stumped by Dinesh Karthik off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
Tharanga was finally bowled by Khan in the 43rd over after smashing 14 boundaries and two sixes.
Play was held up for 26 minutes when the floodlights failed with just four balls remaining of Sri Lanka''s innings.
India allowed 14 days for explanation on pitch fiasco
NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council has allowed the Indian cricket board 14 days for submitting an explanation over the dangerous pitch that led to the abandonment of the fifth and the final One-day International between India and Sri Lanka.
The members of the pitch and ground committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) resigned taking moral responsibility over the abandonment of the fifth and final cricket one-day international (ODI) between India and Sri Lanka due to an unplayable wicket in Delhi on Sunday.
After a meeting of top DDCA officials, the committee chairman Chetan Chauhan, convener Sunil Dev and curator Vijay Bahadur Mishra stepped down.
Earlier during the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) disbanded its grounds and pitches committee with immediate effect.
The fifth and final ODI was abandoned as the wicket was deemed too "dangerous for play".
The match was called off with Sri Lanka 83 for 5 in 23.3 overs after being put into bat by the home side.
