KARACHI: The national team’s participation at the World Championship in Poland in September is in doldrums as the Pakistan Arm-Wrestling Federation (PAF) struggled to arrange funds for the trip.
PAF Secretary Qaisar Khan said the body had initially planned to send up to seven athletes to the event but the selection committee cut down the number of participants to three due to lack of funds and government support.
“We are still looking for sponsors because a tour to Europe will cost us a lot,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “Sending one athlete will cost us around Rs200,000 and being an independent body, we cannot afford that on our own.”
Khan said that the PAF will send their arm-wrestlers in the middle-weight and heavy-weight categories.
Pakistan won four bronze medals at the Asian Championship in Kazakhstan last month and the federation wants to follow up their success in the World Championships as well.
