Default Ajmal restricts Kiwis to 211 in final ODI

Ajmal restricts Kiwis to 211 in final ODI

ABU DHABI: Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal helped Pakistan restrict New Zealand to 211 runs in the third and the final One-day International here at the Abu Dhabi Stadium on Monday.

After New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and elected to bat, the Kiwis were all out for 211 runs in 46.3 overs.

After openers Brendon McCullum (76) and Aaron Redmond (21) provided a sound start of 72 runs, the other batsmen could not resist the guiles of Saeed Ajmal except Martin Guptill who played a steady innings of 44 runs.

McCullum, the top scorer, hit three sixes and six fours during his 78-ball stay at the wicket.

Saeed Ajmal captured four for 33 while young pacer Mohammad Aamer claimed two wickets. Spinners Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik took one wicket each while seamer Umar Gul also got a wicket to complete 100 wickets of his ODI career.

The three-match series is tied at 1-1 after Pakistan won the first match by 138 runs on Tuesday before New Zealand came back by winning the second by 64 runs on Friday.

New Zealand remained unchanged from the last match but Pakistan left out middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf to bring back teenager Umer Akmal, who played the first match.

After the one-day series the teams will move to Dubai where they play two Twenty20 matches on November 12 and 13.

    Squads:
Pakistan: Younus Khan (captain), Salman Butt, Khalid Latif, Umer Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamir

Default New Zealand survive Aamir scare to win series

New Zealand survive Aamir scare to win series

ABU DHABI: New Zealand survived Mohammad Aamir''s explosive half-century to clinch the series against Pakistan with a narrow seven-run victory in the third one-day international here on Monday.

Aamir, 17, hit an unbeaten 73 for his maiden half-century -- the highest score by a number ten batsman in a one-day international -- to bring Pakistan, chasing 212, close to an unexpected victory after they were 101-9.

Pakistan were bowled out for 204, giving New Zealand a sensational 2-1 victory in the three-match series. Pakistan won the first match by 138 runs on Tuesday before New Zealand levelled the series with a 64-run win on Friday.

Aamir and Ajmal added a Pakistan record of 103 for tenth wicket but, needing eight off the last over bowled by Jacob Oram, Ajmal holed out for a career-best 33 to end a sensational match.

The previous highest one-day score for a number ten batsman was 56 not out, made by Zimbabwe''s Douglas Marillier against India at New Delhi in 2002.

When Ajmal joined Aamir Pakistan needed a mammoth-looking 112 runs in 16.5 overs, but Aamir set the tempo for an unexpected win by hitting Daniel Vettori for three sixes in one over.

Slowly and gradually, he and Ajmal approached the target, beating the previous tenth wicket partnership record by Pakistan in all one-day of 72 by Abdul Razzaq and Waqar Younis against South Africa at Durban in 1998.

Aamir, who hit seven boundaries and three sixes during his 81-ball knock, improved on his previous highest score of 24 made against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

In the end New Zealand kept their nerves and did not spoil the early good work by bowlers which saw Pakistan slump from 47- to 101-9.

Earlier, off-spinner Ajmal took a career-best 4-33 to raise hopes of a Pakistan win but Salman Butt (25), Khalid Latif (19), Umer Akmal (12) and Shoaib Malik (11) threw away wickets.

Pakistan got off to a solid 47-run start before Vettori triggered a slump, trapping Latif leg-before in the ninth over. That started the slump.

Captain Younus Khan continued his wretched form, edging Shane Bond to slips after making just three. In the previous over, Younus misjudged a single which resulted in Butt''s run out.

Umer Akmal (12), Malik (11), Afridi (five) and Akmal (four) played reckless shots as Pakistan slumped badly.

Earlier Brendon McCullum, who scored a brilliant hundred on Friday, stood out once again with an aggressive 78-ball 76 which included three sixes and six boundaries.

New Zealand were well on course for a big score but once McCullum got out, caught and bowled by Shoaib Malik, Pakistani spinners led by Ajmal sparked a middle-order collapse to take last seven wickets for 47 runs.

New Zealand had raced to 72 by the 12th over, with McCullum reaching his fifty off just 47 balls.

It was paceman Umar Gul who provided the breakthrough, removing opener Aaron Redmond caught off Aamir for 21.

    This was Gul''s 100th wicket in 67 one-day internationals.

Ajmal then came into his own, removing Martin Guptill (eight), Ross Taylor (44), Daniel Vettori (15) and Jacob Oram (two) to improve on his best one-day figures of 2-16 against the West Indies at Johannesburg in September this year.

Ross Taylor, who failed to score in the first two matches, helped McCullum add 50 for the third wicket before Ajmal trapped him leg-before.

Both teams now move to Dubai where they play two Twenty20 matches on November 12 and 13.

Default Pakistan out to avenge shameful Kiwi loss today

Pakistan out to avenge shameful Kiwi loss today

DUBAI: Shahid Afridi described Pakistan''s defeat in the one-day series as "shameful" but was hopeful his players could lift their performance for the two-match Twenty20 series starting here on Thursday.

Pakistan lost the final match by a narrow seven-run margin in Abu Dhabi to go down 2-1 to New Zealand in the three-match one-day international series.

"It was a shameful defeat and we batted like club cricketers," said Afridi, who will lead the side for the Twenty20 series because Younus Khan quit the shortest form of the game after leading Pakistan to victory in England in June.

During Monday''s one-day international Pakistan, who managed to dismiss New Zealand for 211 all out, were let down by their top-order batsmen as they struggled to 101 for nine.

An explosive unbeaten 73 by tail-ender Mohammad Aamir -- who set the highest score for a number 10 batsman in the history of one-day cricket -- gave them an outside chance of winning.

But Aamir and Saeed Ajmal''s new Pakistani record of 103 for the tenth wicket could not prevent New Zealand from taking the last wicket to survive the turn around and win the match.

Afridi said he has been trying to motivate his players after the defeat, adding that he did not believe being defending Twenty20 champions would put them under extra pressure in Thursday''s opening match.

"We need to stick to the basics and do our best to win both the matches," said Afridi, man-of-the-match in both the semi-final and final of June''s world Twenty20.

Opener Imran Nazir and all-rounders Sohail Tanvir and Fawad Alam have joined the squad for the Twenty20 series. Younus, Mohammad Yousuf, Salman Butt and Wahab Riaz have all been left out.

New Zealand have yet to defeat Pakistan in a Twenty20 encounter but have been buoyed by their one-day series success in Abu Dhabi, said captain Daniel Vettori.

"The one-day series win was a confidence booster for us and I am sure the guys will be more motivated," said Vettori, whose team came from 1-0 down in the series.

"The conditions in the one-day matches were favourable to Pakistan and here also they will suit them, but the key thing is that we have a series win and must keep the pressure up and win the Twenty20 as well."

The Black Caps will have 12 players to chose from after Kyle Mills (shoulder) and James Frankin (back) ruled out of the first match, while all-rounder Jacob Oram left for home to attend his child''s birth, Vettori later told reporters.

The second Twenty20 match here will be played Friday.

    Teams: (from)

Pakistan: Shahid Afridi (capt), Khalid Latif, Imran Nazir, Umer Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamir, Rao Iftikhar, Saeed Ajmal, Imran Farhat, Fawad Alam, Sohail Tanvir

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Aaron Redmond, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling.

Umpires: Nadeem Ghouri (PAK), Zameer Haider (PAK)

    TV umpire: Ahsan Raza (PAK)

Default Pakistan set New Zealand 162 target in T20

Pakistan set New Zealand 162 target in T20

DUBAI: Opener Imran Nazir''s 58 was the cornerstone of Pakistan''s 161 for eight against New Zealand in the first Twenty20 international at Dubai Stadium here on Thursday.

The 27-year-old right-handed batsman hit five boundaries and four towering sixes off 38-balls before New Zealand, who put Pakistan into bat, hit back by taking last six wickets in the space of 69 runs.

Nazir and Kamran Akmal (13) took Pakistan to 34 as Nazir hit two successive sixes off Ian Butler''s fifth over of the innings.

Nazir added a quickfire 36 with captain Shahid Afridi (24), also completing his second Twenty20 half-century off just 34 balls. Paceman Shane Bond had Nazir caught in the outfield in the 12th over to put brakes on the innings.

Aaron Redmond, bowling occasional leg-break for the first time in a limited overs match, added further trouble by dismissing Afridi for 24 and Shoaib Malik (six) to finish with 2-24, before walking off the field with a groin injury.

Abdul Razzaq hit a 15-ball 26 with three boundaries and a six to give final touches to the innings.

New Zealand started the match on the wrong foot as regular captain Daniel Vettori had to sit out after being advised to take a CT scan following vomiting in the afternoon.

Vettori, who also had shoulder problem, was hit on the grille of his helmet during the second one-day international at Abu Dhabi on Friday and began to feel unwell.

Brendon McCullum led the team, which was also missing pacemen Kyle Mills (shoulder) and James Franklin (back).

Default Pakistan beat New Zealand in first T20

Pakistan beat New Zealand in first T20

DUBAI: Pakistan overcame their one-day international series loss and maintained their world champion status in Twenty20 cricket with a convincing 49-run win over New Zealand at Dubai Stadium on Thursday.

Opener Imran Nazir lifted Pakistan to a competitive 161-8 on a pitch of variable bounce before the bowlers unleashed a tight line and length to dismiss New Zealand for 112 in 18.3 overs.

The victory was Pakistan''s 20th in 26 Twenty20 internationals and their third in as many matches against the Black Caps.

Brendon McCullum, leading the side in the absence of the injured Daniel Vettori, raised hopes by smashing 17 off the first over bowled by Mohammad Aamir.

But Aamir came back strongly by claiming McCullum (19) in his second and Ross Taylor (five) in his third to quash any hopes of an upset. Aamir finished with 2-21.

Abdul Razzaq (2-9) then dismissed Scot Styris (four) and Neil Broom (14) before spinners Shahid Afridi (2-21) and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal (2-18) wrapped up the New Zealand''s innings.

The second match will be played here on Friday. Pakistan lost the preceding three-match one-day series 2-1.

Earlier, Nazir hit five boundaries and four towering sixes off 38 balls before New Zealand, who put Pakistan into bat, hit back by taking the last six wickets in the space of 69 runs.

Nazir and Kamran Akmal (13) took Pakistan to 34 as Nazir hit two successive sixes off Ian Butler''s fifth over.

Nazir added a quickfire 36 with captain Afridi (24), also completing his second Twenty20 half-century off just 34 balls. Paceman Shane Bond had Nazir caught in the outfield in the 12th over to put the brakes on the innings.

Aaron Redmond, bowling occasional leg-breaks for the first time in a limited overs match, dismissed Afridi for 24 and Shoaib Malik (six) to finish with 2-24, before hobbling off with a groin injury.

Abdul Razzaq hit a 15-ball 26 with three boundaries and a six to give Pakistan''s innings a final flourish.

New Zealand started the match without captain Vettori who was ordered to undergo a CT scan after being hit on the grill of his helmet during the second one-day international at Abu Dhabi and began to feel unwell.

McCullum led the team, which was also missing pacemen Kyle Mills (shoulder) and James Franklin (back).
