Default New Zealand 276-6 at stumps in 1st Test vs Pakista

New Zealand 276-6 at stumps in 1st Test vs Pakistan

DUNEDIN: Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif celebrated his international cricket recall with three vital wickets to have New Zealand at 276-6 at stumps on the first day of the first Test here Tuesday.

Only a fielding lapse denied him a fourth wicket as New Zealand struggled through the first day after being sent into bat in reasonable conditions.

Daniel Vettori escaped a golden duck in one of three dropped catches that proved costly for Pakistan and allowed New Zealand to build two solid partnerships and recover from a first-ball dismissal.

Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill staged a 117-run rescue stand for the third wicket, while Vettori and Brendon McCullum had put on an unbroken 65 for the seventh wicket.

At stumps Vettori was on 40 and McCullum on 25 after successfully appealing against an lbw dismissal on the penultimate ball of the day.

But around them the New Zealand batting had a familiar air of frailty as Asif posted three for 76 off 24 overs. Mohammad Aamir had two for 62 and Umar Gul, although wicketless, bowled seven maidens in his first nine overs.

Asif, who arrived in New Zealand vowing to repair a promising career that had been stalled by injury and drug scandals, took wickets in the first and last sessions of the day.

Rain stops play as Black Caps cling strong position

DUNEDIN: Rain halted New Zealand''s pleasing progress in the opening cricket test against Pakistan with the Black Caps taking control of the Dunedin match.

New Zealand were 381-7 when rain forced the players from the field at 2.55pm in the second session of the second day.

The covers were on the wicket block. Skipper Daniel Vettori was unbeaten on 87 and Shane Bond was with him on three.

A superb partnership between Vettori and Brendon McCullum allowed New Zealand to take a grip on the mach.

Having resumed the second day at 276-6, Vettori and McCullum extended their partnership through to 164 before McCullum was bowled for 78 just before lunch.

New Zealand had added 99 runs in the first session.

Both batsmen had profited from their positive approaches before Pakistan paceman Umar Gul struck with a Yorker in the last over before lunch to remove McCullum.

Pakistan''s body language had flagged as the morning progressed, frustrated at the crucial seventh wicket stand. This is the first of three tests in the series.

Sarfraz critic of team selection against NZ

LAHORE: Former test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz has criticized selection committee of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over selection of team against New Zealand in first cricket test of three match series, Geo news reported.

He said veteran Test cricket leg spinner Danesh Kaneri should have been opted instead of young and inexperienced Saeed Ajmal.

Talking to mediamen here at Gaddafi Stadium, former fast bowler of Pakistan said Pakistan should have chosen batting after winning toss, but due to unseen fear, captain opted otherwise.

Also, boys did not seem physically fit so they dropped too many catches besides miss fielding on first day of play, he said adding, skipper Muhammad Yousuf must come ahead of young Fawwad Alam at number three position.

NZ 404-8 at stumps on day two vs Pakistan

DUNEDIN: New Zealand were 404 for eight in their first innings at stumps on day two of the first cricket test between New Zealand and Pakistan at University Oval here today.

Bad light stopped play shortly after a resumption following a more than three-hour rain delay.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori was dismissed for 99 as the Black Caps passed 400 to take control of a rain-interrupted first test against Pakistan in Dunedin.

Vettori was dismissed two balls before the end of the second day, one run short of what would have been his fifth test century.

New Zealand were 404-8 when bad light finally stopped play at 7.04pm.

Vettori had been left stranded on 87 for three hours and 20 minutes as rain forced players off the University Oval.

But he quickly got back into his groove only to be caught behind off the bowling of paceman Umar Gul.

The players went off one ball later in what was a disappointing end to another good day''s work by New Zealand.

Vettori and Shane Bond carried on before the rain came midway through the second session, at 2.55pm.

The players returned at 6.35pm with New Zealand at 381-7 and playing hours extended through to 8pm if the light allowed.

Umar Gul was the successful bowler today and ended with two for 115 from 34 overs.

Shane Bond was not out on eight and Iain O''Brien, two, when play ended. The third day will start at 11.30am tomorrow -- 30 minutes earlier in a bid to make up some of the time lost.

This is the first of three tests in the series.
