Default Pakistan selectors face dilemma for UAE series

The Pakistan selectors will meet on October 22 to finalise Pakistan's squad for next month's limited-overs series against New Zealand in the UAE. However, there are two key issues to be sorted out before the final list is announced for the three ODIs and two Twenty20 games in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to be played between November 3-13.

Younis Khan's availability to lead Pakistan in the three ODIs in Abu Dhabi is under a cloud as is fast bowler Mohammad Asif's comeback, and whether he will be cleared by the UAE authorities to play in the series.

"We will have a meeting of the selection committee on October 22 after which we will name the team for the series against New Zealand," Iqbal Qasim, told the News.

Qasim was unsure whether Younis will be taking part in the series, and would wait for an announcement by Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, regarding the issue. Younis resigned as captain earlier this week following match-fixing accusations during the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand. Butt though, refused to accept the decision and is expected to make a ruling on the captaincy issue tomorrow after holding talks with Younis.

Asif, returned to the national team during the Champions Trophy, after serving a one-year ban for doping. He was also deported from Dubai last June after being detained their over possession of a banned drug.

Qasim said he was yet to receive any instructions from the PCB regarding Asif. "We are expecting a word from the PCB regarding Asif before our meeting next week and will take a decision about him accordingly. Asif a match-winning bowler. He is bowling well in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and is an automatic choice for the Pakistan team."

According to PCB officials, a decision on whether Asif can play in UAE will be made next week. Wasim Bari, the PCB's chief operating officer, said the board was still awaiting a reply from the authorities on its request for clearance for Asif. The PCB in fact, had sought ICC's assistance to get Asif cleared for the series against New Zealand.

Asif was barred from entering the UAE after he was detained in Dubai for 19 days last June for allegedly possessing opium when he was returning home after featuring in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was later released without being charged but he was deported from Dubai, which means he cannot travel to the desert state.

Asif was handed a Rs 1-million fine by the PCB for his Dubai misadventure after the IPL drugs inquiry tribunal banned him for a year for failing a dope test. However, the one-year ban was back-dated to September last year, thereby making him eligible for the Champions Trophy.

Default Asif ruled out of New Zealand series

Mohammed Asif's return to international cricket will be temporarily derailed as the Pakistan board clarified that he will not be travelling with the team to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for the ODI and Twenty20 series against New Zealand in November. Asif was deported from the UAE last year, having spent 19 days in detention at Dubai Airport, after he was found to be in possession of a small amount of opium. Though criminal charges were not pressed - reportedly after high-level contacts between the government of Pakistan and the UAE monarchy - the court order called for his immediate deportation and banned him from entering the UAE until further notice.
The PCB had been trying to clarify what the situation was now that Asif is once again available for selection - following completion of a year-long ban for another doping offense last year - but has been told by authorities that he is not allowed back in. "Asif cannot play in the UAE," Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said. "We checked with authorities in UAE what his position was and we can confirm that he cannot play there. If he goes there he will be arrested."
The situation leaves Pakistan in a quandary: following terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team in March this year, international cricket is unlikely to return to Pakistan till 2011. Till that time, it is likely Pakistan will play a number of 'home' series at neutral venues in the UAE. For the time being, however, they will have to make do without the services of one of their leading fast bowlers.

Default New Zealand players want coach sacked

New Zealand players want coach sacked

WELLINGTON: New Zealand''s cricket team wants coach Andy Moles sacked, and claim captain Daniel Vettori has effectively been filling the role for the last six months, a report said Thursday.

An unnamed source said senior players claimed Moles had not provided them with adequate tactical or technical support, a report by Dominion Post cricket writer and former New Zealand fast bowler Jonathan Millmow said.

New Zealand Cricket responded to the report by confirming Moles'' position as coach.

Moles would continue to prepare the team for a series of one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates starting early next month, chief executive Justin Vaughan said.

He said New Zealand Cricket was reviewing the team?s performance following a recent tour to Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy tournament in South Africa, in which New Zealand lost to Australia in the final.

"This looks at all aspects of individual and collective performance with a view to continuous improvement," Vaughan said in a statement.

The 48-year-old former English county batsman took over as New Zealand coach last year from John Bracewell, after stints with Kenya, Scotland and New Zealand first class side Northern Districts.

New Zealand''s record has been patchy since Moles took over the reins. Four tests have been drawn and three lost, and in one-day internationals New Zealand has won nine and lost 10.
