Marc Márquez became MotoGP world champion after an exciting race which was won by Jorge Lorenzo and saw the rookie finish third, behind Dani Pedrosa in second. It was a battle of nerves in front of the 100,000 spectators who witnessed several closely fought duels.
As has been the case throughout the year, Lorenzo took control from the start, while Márquez was pegged back. The Majorcan took an early lead, ahead of Pedrosa and Márquez, in third after reaching the first bend neck-and-neck with Bautista.
Lorenzo opted to slow down the pace on the first bends in order to keep the pack together. Pedrosa tried to overtake him on several occasions and managed to do so, but Lorenzo continuously fought back on the following bend – in aggressive fashion on some occasions.
Lorenzo's bike touched Pedrosa at one point, with the latter forced outside and returning in fifth position behind Rossi and Bautista, an incident that was referred to the Race Direction. Meanwhile, Márquez crept into first place, only for Lorenzo to claim the lead once again soon after.
Despite being told by his team to remain calm, Lorenzo had other ideas and chose to go for victory, which he achieved after breaking away. The Catalan followed him and opened up a gap that was big enough to avoid a fifth-place finish – which would have thwarted his title hopes. Pedrosa upped the pace and overtook Márquez, who did not resist as he had his eye on the title. Márquez got what he wanted, while Alzamora, Nakamoto and half the Honda team were left dejected. The rookie became MotoGP champion and a triple world champion - all at the age of 20.
