This ‘fake’ Friends reunion poster has been sending fans into a frenzy (Picture: Twitter)

Another year, another rumour of a Friends reunion. This time, a poster of the supposed new ‘episode’ has been doing the rounds on Twitter and sending fans crazy.

It would be the right time for another episode, too. The long-running sitcom is coming up to its 20th anniversary and, according to the internet, show bosses only have to convince Jennifer Aniston to sign up.

But here’s why a reunion is possibly the worst idea in the history of bad sitcom ideas.

    They’ve all grown up

By our calculations, the Friends will have to be over 40 now, and it seems a bit far-fetched to show them as awkward (Chandler), promiscuous (Joey) or dippy (Phoebe) as they used to be.

The Ross and Rachel ‘will they/won’t they’ conundrum is no more

The saving grace for the last couple of series was whether Ross and Rachel would ever stop messing around and finally get it together.
We all know the answer now… yes, they will.

And they did. Despite 10 years of being on/off more times than Chandler told an awkward joke, Rachel got off the plane to Paris and came back to live happily ever after with Ross and Emma.

It was supposed to be the happy ending we all wanted, so dragging this out even further would taint the whole thing. Enough is enough, so what would have to happen to replace this storyline?

    They’ve all moved on

At the end of the final series, the group said goodbye to Monica’s apartment as they all settled down and started their new families. We presume Rachel moved into Ross’s place across the street, and Joey must have settled down by now.
It just wouldn’t be the same now they’ve all moved to suburbia, without Central Perk downstairs and New York in the background.
No more weddings. No more bad dates. A couple more kids and maybe a divorce or two. Boo hiss.

    One word: Joey

That doomed Friends spin-off was truly awful. So soon after we all mourned the purple door, Central Perk and Paul Rudd’s extended cameo, we were given Joey as a watered-down replacement.

The spin-off lasted two seasons before it was tossed into a sitcom black hole.
If that drivel was the best they could come up with, can a 20th anniversary special/series really live up to everything that the original gave us?

It had dragged on for too long already

There’s a reason why The Office and Fawlty Towers ended after a couple of series and never returned. Trying to drag out a classic that has so many dedicated fans is risky and, if we’re honest, the last few series had grown tired by the eighth or ninth series. Ten years seemed like enough.
For a certain generation, Friends is woven into almost every 90s cultural reference we can think of. If the tweets over the weekend are anything to go by, people are very sentimental about it.

Another stab at it would be so hyped that it would be unlikely to live up to fans’ preconceptions.
In the age of Twitter, where it would become very apparent very quickly whether it had hit the right note, it might leave us with a very bad taste of half-trifle, half-shepherds pie in our mouths.
