Default Abdul Qadir wants Test, ODI-type trial matches

ISLAMABAD: Chief selector Pakistan Cricket Bhutto (PCB) Abdul Qadir wants trial matches on the pattern of Tests and One-day Internationals to select the national team probables for the series against Sri Lanka starting in January.

Qadir told Geo News he had finalised a list of almost 44 probables and would request the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to allow him arrange one Test type of a match and a couple of one-day matches before selecting the probables for the series.

“I have already selected four teams on the basis of performance during the ongoing domestic cricket matches. I have hardly missed the top domestic matches ever since I was appointed chief selector. With the help and assistance of the other selectors I have finalised a list of players who I think have the potential to shine at the international level. I would take the list with me to Lahore at the end of the Pentangular Cup.”

Qadir said he wants to engage the team for one-Test type of a match and for a couple of one-dayers. “What I want to see is their match temperament against the best of the selected players. There are a good number of players who could go on to prove their worth for international matches. All I need is to see their ability to play against the best unit.”

Qadir said he did not want to disrupt the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy engagement. “We have a very short time with us before the start of the series against Sri Lanka and I want to use every minute of it and by engaging top players in a couple of trial matches.”

The former Test cricketer said you never know who would go on to show his worth in the trial matches. “The idea is to give opportunity to those who have shown promise in top domestic cricket and these players are from every association of the country.”

Qadir said what he needed was a few days and two grounds to try the national probables. “I just want a few days where I could try these players on the field.” In another interesting comment, Qadir backed two separate teams and captains for Test and one-day cricket.

“It is not a bad idea and worth giving a try. Why not two separate teams and two captains. By doing that we would have far greater options and a good number of players to look at.” Qadir said he would discuss the matter with Butt when he would seek his approval regarding arranging trial matches for the top probables.

“We have enough talent in our country and by having separate teams we can start planning ahead and building a combination for the Twenty20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup including other limited overs competition.”, he maintained.
