ROK TV is a Symbian mobile phone application which according to me is a very nice application considering the purpose for which is was built but just due to its untimely arrival in the market, it could not make it big. By untimely I mean that the application came before age. However the concept was widely appreciated by most of the people around the world.
ROK TV is a live video streaming application directly on your mobile phone. With ROK TV not only can you watch the live stuff going on OTA but also the television broadcast channels. However since the application is in its developmental phase, not much of the channels are available but some the channels are ITN News 24, CNN, Cartoon Network, Tidy TV, SN TV and F3. The best part is that the application is compatible with the existing 2.5G networks and it doesn’t need any fancy 3G network.
The application does very well what it meant to but the drawback here is that with the bandwidth consumption of approximately 4K per second, this application will certainly prove to be a very costly option to watch TV on your smartphone. This was the major downfall of this application. As far as the picture clarity is concerned, it is reasonably good and the sound is also very fine. Even if I keep this monetary issue aside there is one more issue that certainly bothered me quite a lot and that is installation procedure which is actually requires some tweaking with the ROK TV WAP page.
The video stream only plays back at around 10 frames per second, but for a picture size of 208 pixels in width. Once you have selected the channel you want to watch you will have to wait for about 30 seconds to let the frames to buffer.
