Both Australia and South Africa have been told to ignore the possible distraction of the IPL and concentrate on their battle for the No. 1 one-day ranking. The rearranged Twenty20 tournament is preparing for its start and the international teams could run into some of the IPL franchises in Cape Town next week.
However, Ricky Ponting, whose side took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, said the moment any outside issues emerged they would be addressed. "I'd like to think that the guys have solely got their minds on what they need to have their minds on for the next couple of weeks,'' Ponting told AAP. "The IPL will start up once our tournament is over. Whenever you are representing Australia, if you have a clouded mind on anything at all then you are not going to play your best cricket."
Ponting said he had not heard any talk within the team about the IPL. "We know that we've got a lot of guys coming out from Australia who will be arriving in South Africa very soon to start their preparations for the IPL," he said. "The moment I hear any of that stuff creeping in, it will be addressed.''
Australia are currently ranked No. 2 and will try to reclaim top spot in the one-day rankings over the next two weeks. "They will be the motivating factors for us, nothing to do with the IPL," Ponting said. "All the money and contracts have been sorted anyway. Now it's just a matter of representing your country the best way that you possibly can."
Graeme Smith's men have a greater challenge to ignore the hype as the event is being staged in their backyard. "With the fact that it has come here to South Africa, it has impacted a lot more on the players at home,'' Smith said. "They have had probably a lot more involvement in terms of information for the respective teams.
"I know Rajasthan join in Cape Town in Monday. I have had an involvement in that. Our focus is now on South Africa for the next two weeks and making sure our performances are of top standard here. Ultimately South Africa comes first."
Jerome Taylor, the West Indies fast bowler who was picked up by Kings XI Punjab in this year's auction, has been ruled out of the IPL due to an injury, the franchise owner Ness Wadia said. He also said that he didn't expect the franchise to lose much money because of moving the tournament to South Africa as the IPL would underwrite some of the costs.
Taylor sustained the injury from a vehicle accident and has been replaced by the 26-year-old South African left-arm fast bowler Yusuf Abdulla, who made an impressive Twenty20 debut against Australia last week.
The news of Taylor pulling out comes as a blow to the franchise, which has already lost the services of their most successful bowler from the previous season, Sreesanth, due to a back injury. Also, one of their most expensive players, Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, is recovering from a foot injury, and has not played any cricket this year.
Wadia said having South African players in the squad will be "critical" to success in the second season because they know the conditions well. He cited that as one of the reasons for signing up Abdulla. "We will be playing six matches in Durban, which is Abdulla's home ground," he said, "and he knows the ground better than anybody."
Abdulla has played 26 Twenty20 matches, and his economy rate of 5.83 ranks among the best in the world.
When asked about the financial impact on the franchise of holding the IPL in South Africa, Wadia felt there wouldn't be too much of an effect. "To be honest it balances (the extra costs and the savings made because of the switch) itself out," he said. "They will be hidden costs, and I'm sure there also will be hidden profits also. [The total expenses] will be within plus or minus 10% eventually, in my view ."
Wadia said the franchises will definitely have to pay for using the South African grounds, and was unsure whether those costs would be covered by the IPL. He was also uncertain whether the franchises would get a share of the gate revenue.
Punjab have also signed up Dave Nosworthy, head coach of the Lions, to assist coach Tom Moody. Wadia also confirmed that the franchise had chosen Port Elizabeth as their base for the tournament. "It is a small town where everything is five minutes away, which allows us to focus on practice and playing cricket."
Major international news agencies would not be covering this year's IPL because they are unhappy with the tournament's media guidelines. They had boycotted the previous year's IPL for the same reason.
The News Media Coalition, the umbrella body that comprises global news and photograph agencies Reuters, AP, AFP and Getty Images, has failed to get the tournament's organisers to amend the conditions.
Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, refused to change rules which barred the distribution of photographs and news to cricket-specific websites. The IPL has an exclusive agreement to supply news and photos about the Twenty20 tournament to one website.
"We can't allow the sponsor of a newsworthy event to specify where news gets distributed," Dave Tomlin, the AP's associate general counsel, said. "This is a case in which a sports association is now in the information business too and is trying to carve out an exclusive segment of the news market as its own to exploit. It's wrong."
Last year, besides agencies, news channels in India had also threatened a boycott over the constraints laid down by the IPL before agreeing to cover it after the tournament's organisers acceded to their main demands.

Sree santh not playing in ipl 2009
Indian bowler Sree Santh is not playing IPL 2009 in South Africa. Sree Santh is not fit hence he can play cricket. Sree Santh is member of The Kings XI Punjab owned by Bollywood Actress Preity Zinta.
Last year in IPL 1st season , Harbhajan singh slapped Sree Santh.
The Kings XI Punjab officials have released a press statement, saying Sreesanth is going to miss the IPL 2009. However, he will still remain with the team as a 'Fan Mentor and Community face'.

Spectators interest in IPL continues despite shifting to SA
CAPE TOWN: The interest of spectators in the Indian Premier League (IPL) continues despite its shifting to South Africa.
Chairman IPL Lalit Modi has claimed that the tickets of the initial matches were sold out in just two hours.
Talking with media here on Wednesday, Moddi said that he assures the spectators that they would get the opportunity to watch the best cricket in the IPL matches.
He said that like the first edition of the IPL, great entertainment is being provided this time, too.
Lalit Modi said that thousands of tickets were arranged for the IPLs initial matches and all were sold out in just two hours which reflects how much enthusiasm of the spectators found in the IPL.
Meanwhile, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab and renowned film actress Preity Zinta said that the same players who play against each other would play together and would remain together. Spectators would get much entertainment and she believes the IPL this time would be more interesting than earlier.
