Controlled Hayden sinks Mumbai IPL hopes

PORT ELIZABETH: Matthew Hayden made a controlled half-century as Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the Indian Premier League at St George''s Park here on Saturday.

The defeat virtually ended Mumbai''s chances of reaching the semi-finals. With only one match left, against the top-of-the-log Delhi Daredevils, they are stuck in seventh place.

Hayden made 60 not out off 57 balls, pacing his innings superbly as Chennai chased down a moderate Mumbai total of 147-5, winning with five balls to spare.

Chennai entrenched themselves in second place in the eight-team competition.

JP Duminy was mainly responsible for Mumbai reaching their total. The South African left-hander made 62, his fifth half-century of the tournament, off 54 balls.

It was a familiar tale for Mumbai, with Duminy holding the innings together after the team''s stars, Sanath Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar, were dismissed.

Jayasuriya threatened to play a major innings, hitting 30 off 17 balls, before top-edging a catch to point. Tendulkar made 11 before he was caught at deep mid-wicket.

Duminy and Abhishek Nayar (33 not out) put on 65 for the fourth wicket before Duminy was run out, backing up too far, in the final over.

Hayden was unusually cautious at the start of Chennai''s innings. At the mid-innings break he had scored only 15 off 28 balls in a total of 56-2.

Chennai looked in a trouble when Subramaniam Badrinath was out in the 11th over but Hayden, partnered by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, lifted his scoring rate as Chennai won comfortably in the end.

Hayden reached his fifth half-century of the campaign with a huge six off Harbhajan Singh which sailed out of the ground beyond mid-wicket.

Default Deccan Chargers thrash Kolkata by six wickets

Deccan Chargers thrash Kolkata by six wickets

JOHANNESBURG: Deccan Chargers climbed one place to third in the Indian Premier League table after a thrilling six-wicket win over struggling Kolkata Knight Riders at Wanderers Saturday.

Kolkata made 160-5 after they lost the toss and were put into bat first and Deccan reached 166-4 off the last ball of their 20 overs, handing bottom team Kolkata their 10th loss of the tournament.

Deccan captain Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs combined in a 68-run opening partnership as the Chargers took another step closer to the semi-finals.

Gilchrist thumped Mashrafe Mortaza for successive sixes in the second over and eventually got a top edge to deep square leg trying to sweep Brad Hodge.

But his 43 off 31 deliveries got Deccan off to a speedy start in their run chase.

Gibbs was the next to go, contributing 28 off 34, and Tirumalsetti Suman followed with 31 from 24.

Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds added a cameo 18 off 13 balls, and Rohit Sharma, who hit an unbeaten 32 from 13 balls and smashed Mortaza for six off the last ball to win the game, guided them home.

"Rohit played some great innings last year and to see him stand up like this was amazing," Gilchrist said. "We''re back here tomorrow and hopefully we''ll be fresh for that match."

Earlier, Kolkata opening batsman Sourav Ganguly had shared 55 runs with Brad Hodge for the second wicket.

Ganguly made 33 off 41 balls before being removed by Ishant Sharma in the 15th over and Hodge was dismissed three overs later after contributing 48 from 41 deliveries.

Following their departures, David Hussey smashed 43 runs off only 17 balls with two fours and four sixes.

Ryan Harris led the Deccan attack, bagging the scalps of McCullum and Hodge for a 2-20 return.

Default Deccan win toss and put Punjab into bat

Deccan win toss and put Punjab into bat

JOHANNESBURG: Deccan Chargers chose to field against the Kings XI Punjab, who must win today to stay afloat in the IPL.

Deccan gave Jaskaran Singh his first game in place of Harmeet Singh, who went wicketless for 40 runs against Kolkata. Punjab made no changes to the side that beat the Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

Deccan''s win last night took them to 14 points with two games in hand but even though the match against Punjab is not a must-win, a defeat against them will force Deccan into such a situation against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Punjab with 12 points and a negative net run-rate are presently not among the top four, and have two games to play.

The upshot of their off-colour campaign though, is that even if they win against Deccan, they will have another crucial game against Chennai Super Kings.

Kings XI Punjab: Simon Katich, Sunny Sohal, Luke Pomersbach, Yuvraj Singh (captain), Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Irfan Pathan, Brett Lee, Piyush Chawla, Ramesh Powar, Wilkin Mota, Sreesanth.

Deccan Chargers: Adam Gilchrist (captain wk), Herschelle Gibbs, T Suman, Rohit Sharma, Andrew Symonds, Venugopal Rao, D Ravi Teja, Ryan Harris, RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Jaskarandeep Singh.

Default Punjab’s exciting one-run win over Deccan

Punjab’s exciting one-run win over Deccan

JOHANNESBURG: In an exciting finish, Kings XI Punjab stunned Deccan Chargers by one run victory off the last ball here on Sunday.

Chasing 135, Deccan Chargers began their innings confidence when their openers captain Adam Gilchrist (23) and Herschelle Gibbs (26) provided a good start but later they were losing wickets at regular intervals.

However, Deccan was looking to win the match when Rohit Sharma blasted 42 from 26 balls with three sixes and three fours and Andrew Symonds also contributed 23 and they needed 11 runs in the final over but due to Irfan Pathan’s intelligent bowling Deccan batsmen lost two wickets as they could not get the required runs and ultimately gave up the match by just one run.

Yuvraj Singh captured three wickets for 13 runs while Ramesh Powar and Irfan Pathan claimed two wickets each for 11 and 29 runs, respectively.

Earlier, Kings XI Punjab made 134 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs after after put in by Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist.

Only Kumar Sangakkara resisted the Punjab’s accurate bowling and made 56 from 43 balls with four fours and one six while only four other batsmen could get into double figures.

For Deccan Chargers, RP Singh claimed three wickets for 26 runs while Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao took two wickets each.
Deccan Chargers made only one change in their team by bringing in Jaskaran Singh in place of Harmeet Singh while Punjab made no changes to the side that beat the Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

Munaf Patel got two wickets and Johan Botha took one for Rajasthan Royals.

Delhi made many changes in their team. Daniel Vettori was swapped for Dirk Nannes, Rajat Bhatia went out for Amit Mishra and Pradeep Sangwan, who had a miserable last game, was replaced by Avishkar Salvi.

Rajasthan made only one change by bringing back medium-pacer Amit Singh in the team.

Rajasthan Royals, in reply, fell short of 14 runs as they were bowled out at 136 runs.

Botha 34, Jadeja 24 while Rodat scored 11 runs. Mishra got out 3 players, Maharof and Silva shared 2 wickets each while both Nehar and Nanez grabbed 1 wicket each.

Default Chennai win toss and bat against Kolkata

Chennai win toss and bat against Kolkata

CENTURION: MS Dhoni has won the toss and opted to bat in favourable conditions at the Supersport Park in Centurion against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday.

Matthew Hayden has been rested due to a niggle in his thigh and George Bailey, who has played two matches in the competition but never got a chance to bat, was drafted in as his replacement.

Kolkata made four changes from the team that lost to Deccan Chargers. Mashrafe Mortaza was dropped after his nightmare spell, giving way to Ajantha Mendis. Ishant Sharma, Shoaib Sheikh and Yashpal Singh sat out as Kolkata Knight Riders opted for a renewed bowling attack, inducting Laxmi Shukla, Ashok Dinda and Anureet Singh.

Chennai are currently placed second and will confirm their qualification for the semi-finals if they beat Kolkata. If they lose though, they will face the frustrating prospect of having to rely on the outcome of their final league game against Kings XI Punjab, and possibly net run-rate to see where they finish.

    Teams:
Chennai Super Kings: Parthiv Patel, Suresh Raina, S Badrinath, George Bailey, MS Dhoni (captain and wk), Jacob Oram, Albie Morkel, Shadab Jakati, L Balaji, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sudeep Tyagi.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Brendon McCullum (captain), Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Laxmi Shukla, Ajit Agarkar, Anureet Singh, Murali Kartik, Ashok Dinda, Ajantha Mendis.
