Pandey smashes Bangalore to win over Deccan

CENTURION: Manish Pandey blitzed the highest score of the 2009 Indian Premier League Thursday to guide Bangalore Royal Challengers to a 12-run victory over Deccan Chargers and third place in the final standings.

The result means Deccan play table-toppers Delhi Daredevils in the first semi-final at Centurion Friday while Bangalore take on Chennai Super Kings in Johannesburg the following afternoon.

Pandey batted through the innings after Bangalore won the toss and elected to wield the willow first, finishing with an unbeaten 114 off just 73 balls as the Challengers posted a formidable 170-4 total.

It was a remarkable effort from the little-known 19-year-old, who took advantage of being dropped on two by RP Singh to score only the second century of the Twenty20 extravaganza this season.

"It was a brilliant hundred," reflected Bangalore skipper Anil Kumble. "Manish got a few opportunities but didn''t get to bat in the other games because he was down the order.

"So we just took a chance and sent him up the order and he came off really well."

Deccan got off to a flying start in pursuit of their hefty target with Herschelle Gibbs leading the way, and at the halfway stage were perfectly poised on 85 for the loss of one wicket.

But after Gibbs departed for 60, caught in the deep by Pandey off the bowling of Balachandra Akhil, Andrew Symonds (18) fell soon after and the innings unraveled.

Impressive bowling displays from Kumble (2-23) and medium pacer Akhil (2-18) sealed victory and ensured Bangalore enjoy a one-day rest while Deccan face the dangerous Daredevils.

"We weren''t as sharp as what we''d have liked to have been, so it was bit disappointing in that regard," admitted Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist.

"It would have been nice to have a positive result leading into the semi-finals, but it starts again tomorrow."

CENTURION: Adam Gilchrist, captain of Deccan Chargers, has won the toss and put Delhi Daredevils into bat in the first semi-final of the Indian Premier League Doosra here at the Super Sport Park on Friday.

Ashish Nehra, who was rested for the game against the Mumbai Indians, has returned at the expense of Avishkar Salvi, who was pretty impressive as well.

David Warner, who has been among the runs, held on to his spot as opener despite Sehwag''s return to form.

The impressive displays by the bowlers meant Glenn McGrath and Daniel Vettori missed out again.

Dilshan helps Delhi set Deccan 154 in 1st SF

CENTURION: Tillekeratne Dilshan along with his captain Virender Sehwag and AB de Villiers steered Delhi Daredevils to 153-8 in the allotted 20 overs against Deccan Chargers in the first semi-final of the Indian Premier League here at the Super Sport Park on Friday.

Dilshan made 65 runs from 51 balls with seven fours and one six, run out off the final ball of the innings.

After put into bat by Adam Gilchrist, Delhi began disastrously by losing both their openers for nought.

However, Sehwag and Dilshan got together and took out the team out of woods by scoring 85 for the third wicket.

Sehwag made 39 off 31 balls with five fours and later AB de Villiers scored 26 and added 48 with Dilshan for the fourth wicket.

For Deccan, Ryan Harris captured three wickets for 27 while RP Singh got two and Andrew Symonds took one wicket.

Deccan Chargers have made it to the finals today, they had a positive start by knocking of both the Delhi openers for ducks in consecutive balls, and to make things worst for Delhi, this happened in the first over of the game itself..! a great work was done by Sehwag and Dilshan, but 150 odd runs were never enough, specially if Gilchrist was to bat like the way he did.. Deccan win IPL title beating Bangalore

JOHANNESBURG: Deccan Chargers won the championship in the second edition of the Indian Premier League by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs in the final here at Wanderers on Sunday.

Chasing 144 runs, Bangalore missed the target by just seven runs and could make 137 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Their main scorers were R.van der Merwe (32), Ross Taylor (27) and Robin Uthappa (17 not out) and Jacquis Kallis (16).

For Deccan, Pragyan Ojha claimed three wickets for 28 runs while Andrew Symonds and Harmeet Singh took two wickets each.

Earlier, Deccan Chargers scored 143 runs for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 20 overs after Bangalore captain Anil Kumble won the toss and put them into bat.

However, Kumble’s leg break bowling did not let Bangalore batsmen score freely and he captured four wickets for only 16 runs.

Only Herschelle Gibbs provided some resistance, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 48 balls with three fours and two sixes. He was the only batsman to reach a half-century in the match.

Other main scorers were Andrew Symonds (33) and Virat Kumar (24). Both hit one six each.

JOHANNESBURG: Deccan Chargers were restricted to 143 –6 in the allotted 20 overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final of the Indian Premier League here at Wanderers on Sunday.

Bangalore captain Anil Kumble won the toss and put Deccan Chargers into bat but their batsmen could not make any resistance against tidy bowling of Kumble who captured four wickets for only 16 runs.

Only Herschelle Gibbs succeeded in reaching half-century to help his team get some respectable total. He was unbeaten on 53 off 48 balls with three fours and two sixes.

Other main scorers were Andrew Symonds (33) and Virat Kumar (24). Both hit one six each.
