Beating India can propel us in World Twenty20 - Ashraful
Bangladesh have had two consecutive defeats in their warm-up matches but captain Mohammad Ashraful believes a good start in the World Twenty20 could take them beyond the Super Eights stage.
Bangladesh are grouped with India and Ireland, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the Super Eights stage, and Ashraful is confident of his team's chances. "Our first goal is the Super Eights, but if we have a good start against India [at Trent Bridge on Saturday], it will give us the confidence of going far in the tournament," he said.
Bangladesh lost to Australia by 38 runs on Monday and to Sri Lanka by six wickets on Tuesday, but Ashraful did not seem too perturbed. "It's been a good workout for us," he said after Tuesday's game. "This is a format in which any side can beat the other. It's not a lottery but everything depends on how a team plays on that particular day."
India will be wary of Bangladesh, having lost to them in the 50-over World Cup in 2007, leading to their elimination in the group stages.

Default Pak set India 159 run target in T20 warm-up

Pak set India 159 run target in T20 warm-up

LONDON: Ishant Sharma led the India attack as they restricted arch-rivals Pakistan to 158 for six in their ICC World Twenty20 warm-up match at the Oval here on Tuesday.

Pace bowler Sharma took one for 18 in three overs with Pakistan unable to score off 11 off his deliveries.

Pakistan lost three wickets with their score on 45 and it needed an unbroken stand of 45 off 27 balls between the talented Misbah-ul-Haq (37 not out) and Yasir Arafat (25 not out) to help give their bowlers a score to defend.

Unusually for a warm-up, this game - a repeat of the 2007 World Twenty20 final which India won by five runs in Johannesburg - was being played in front of a 23,000 sell-out crowd.

Both sides were able to draw on large groups of supporters from within the British Asian community and the result was that every run and wicket was cheered to the echo as if the game was the climax of the tournament.

After Pakistan captain Younus Khan won the toss and batted in overcast conditions, India did not have long to wait for a wicket with Praveen Kumar bowling Shehzeb Hussain for nought with the fifth ball of the innings.

New batsman Kamran Akmal struck several stylish boundaries to the delight of the Pakistan fans. But his exit sparked a collapse that saw three wickets lost with the score on 45.

Akmal, backing up, was brilliantly run-out by Suresh Raina''s diving underarm direct hit in the covers and three balls later Raina was involved again when he caught Ahmed Shehzad off Ishant Sharma.

Shahid Afridi can turn any match with his destructive batting but next ball he was out for a golden duck.

Afridi was caught behind by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni off paceman Irfan Pathan and the batsman ''walked'' rather than waiting for Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf to give him out.

Wicket-keeper Dhoni was involved again when he caught Shoaib Malik (14) off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha''s second ball to leave Pakistan 63 for five in the ninth over.

However, a composed stand of 50 in 45 balls between Younus and Misbah-ul-Haq repaired some of the early damage before Younus was stumped for a run-a-ball 32 by opposing skipper Dhoni of the bowling of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Sharma helps India win over Pak in T20 warm-up
LONDON: Brilliant batting from Rohit Sharma saw defending champions India to a crushing nine-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their ICC World Twenty20 warm-up match at the Oval here on Tuesday.

Sharma made 80 and shared a huge first-wicket stand of 140 with left-hander Gautam Gambhir (52 not out) that got India to the brink of their 159 target.

It needed a fine catch in the deep by Ahmed Shehzad off Mohammad Amir, one of seven bowlers used, to end Sharma's innings of 93 balls with two sixes and nine fours.

But India still won with three overs to spare.

India, who lost to New Zealand by nine runs in their previous warm-up match, were again without star batsman Virender Sehwag because of a shoulder injury.

But such was Sharma's form, Sehwag was barely missed as Pakistan suffered a second heavy warm-up defeat after their 59-run loss to South Africa.

This match was a repeat of the 2007 final which India won by five runs in a thrilling contest in Johannesburg. But here a capacity crowd had to be content with Indian excellence alone.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma led the India attack with one for 18 in three overs as they restricted Pakistan to 158 for six in 20 overs.

Pakistan lost three wickets with their score on 45 and it needed an unbroken stand of 45 between Misbah-ul-Haq (37 not out) and Yasir Arafat (25 not out) to give them some hope of staying in the game.

India, chasing 159 for victory, saw Sharma loft Arafat for six and pull Amir for four. Meanwhile Gambhir weighed in with the occasional blazing hit, pulling leg-spinner Shahid Afridi to the mid-wicket boundary during his 45-ball fifty.

Unusually for a warm-up, this game was being played in front of a 23,000 sell-out crowd.

After Pakistan captain Younus Khan won the toss and batted in overcast conditions, India saw Praveen Kumar bowl Shehzeb Hussain for nought with the fifth ball of the match.

A composed stand of 50 in 45 balls between Younus and Misbah-ul-Haq repaired some of the early damage before Younus was stumped for a run-a-ball 32 off Harbhajan Singh.

India begn the tournament proper against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge on Saturday while Pakistan face hosts England at The Oval 24 hours later.

Scotland’s Blain released from T20 squad
NOTTINGHAM, England: Scotland seamer Blain has been released from the team’s Twenty20 World Cup squad after he left the camp following a heated team meeting, a Cricket Scotland official said on Monday.

Blain, 30, was replaced by Calum MacLeod after the International Cricket Council’s technical committee allowed the switch. In a media release, the ICC said Blain had withdrawn from the event for ‘personal reasons’.

Blain conceded 43 runs from his four overs in his only practice match against Bangladesh on Friday.

“After a practice match on Saturday there was a team meeting and some harsh words were said,” Cricket Scotland Chief Executive Roddy Smith told Reuters. “John then decided he wanted to leave the squad.

“The replacement definitely wasn’t made on medical grounds. The ICC obviously didn’t want us to go into the tournament with only 14 players in our squad instead of 15.”

Blain is one of the most experienced players in the Scotland team after playing county cricket for Northamptonshire and Yorkshire. Scotland open their campaign against New Zealand at the Oval on Saturday.

Default Spinners could not perform up to mark: Intikhab

Spinners could not perform up to mark: Intikhab

LONDON: The coach Pakistan cricket team Intikhab Alam has rebuked spinners over their sub-standard performance against Indian in the ICC World Twenty20 warm-up match saying, “They could not perform up to the mark which resulted in our defeat”.

He said the Kamran Akmal’s getting run out during the match was the turning point but ruled out any disappointment over the loss to Indian in the match.

Talking to media after the match was over, he said I am not disappointed over the pocketing defeat against arch-rivals but urged spinners to perform well.

Loosing two matches in a row does not mean that we are out of question now and nation should not looses hope too, he remarked maintaining, “Some of players got out playing beauties (difficult deliveries)”.

Mahindra Singh Dhoni, Indian skipper, on the occasion said I am happy with the performance of our team and it is not always easy to defeat Pakistan but we will have to perform well in every match.

I cannot state any thing with firm belief in regard to the fitness of Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag at this point of time, he concluded.
