Default World Cup talks break down, says PCB

World Cup talks break down, says PCB

LONDON: Talks over Pakistan''s right to host matches in the 2011 cricket World Cup in Asia have broken down, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Saturday.

"The PCB sought the support of its fellow Asian co-hosts for matches to be played under the aegis of the PCB in a safe neutral venue," the PCB said in a statement here.

"Despite the fact that these discussions had been helpfully and constructively brokered by the International Cricket Council president David Morgan and vice president Sharad Pawar, no progress was made.

"This will mean that organizational issues surrounding the 2011 World Cup remain unresolved and that the legal proceedings the PCB has brought against the ICC in Dubai and in Lahore will continue," the statement added.

The PCB''s response came after a meeting of officials from the four co-hosts -- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- here at Lord''s on the sidelines of the World Twenty20 tournament.

Pakistan had served legal notices on the ICC after being stripped of hosting rights in the wake of the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore on March 3 and the deteriorating security situation in the volatile nation.

The ICC had clarified earlier this week that while Pakistan were removed as a host location, the country remained a co-host and expected a final decision soon.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said it is nearing an agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over plans for the 2011 World Cup.

Pakistan were due to co-host the tournament, along with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, but the 14 matches scheduled to be played there will be played elsewhere.

This decision came following the attack on the Sri Lankan side in November 2008, after which the ICC banned the PCB from hosting any matches until the security situation in the country was more stable.

Pakistan lost the right to host the Champions trophy following the incident but will receive revenue from the tournament which will now be held in South Africa.

A similar arrangement could be arrived at with regards to the 14 scheduled World Cup fixtures, which could be spread between the three other host nations with revenues then being handed to the PCB.

ICC president David Morgan said talks between the governing bodies had gone well and expected a recommendation about where the matches could be hosted to be announced soon.

"I am pleased we have made progress on this matter," he commented.

"We believe we have come up with that means [on where the matches originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan can be held] now, through the meeting of the host countries, and if they are able to produce a recommendation when they meet on Saturday then that can be tabled for consideration by the ICC''s commercial board next Thursday."

Pakistan, Sri Lanka rise again in World T20 final
LONDON: Pakistan and Sri Lanka will contest the World Twenty20 final at Lord's on Sunday.

Pakistan, who beat favourites South Africa by seven runs in Thursday's semi-final, have bounced back in style at this tournament.

They will face unbeaten Sri Lanka in the final after their Asian rivals thrashed the West Indies by 57 runs at the Oval on Friday.

Despite the events in Lahore, Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said relations between the two sides had remained friendly.

"What Lahore really brought home to us was we are just the same as anyone else," he said.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 19 runs in a Super Eights match earlier at this tournament but Sangakkara said: "We've played Pakistan many times before but in T20 you must take every game in isolation. Different players come into form at different times.

"Hopefully, we can put in a good performance and walk away with a trophy."

The dangerous Shahid Afridi produced a brilliant all-round display in Pakistan's semi-final triumph, scoring 51 and then taking two wickets for 16 runs with his leg-spinners.

"He is a guy who can take the game away in few overs, but we can't just concentrate on him," said Sangakkara.

In Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, Sangakkara has two star spinners of his own although Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal should not be disregarded.

"Mendis, the way he's bowled in the middle overs had been a charm," Sangakkara said. "Even Pakistan watch him closely, they know he can get their wickets."

Sri Lanka's semi-final victory was built on a brilliant innings from Tillekaratne Dilshan, the leading scorer at the tournament with 317 runs, who carried his bat for 96 not out in a total of 158 for five.

Then came a sensational first over in the West Indies' reply, which saw seam bowler Angelo Mathews take three wickets as Xavier Marshall, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Bravo all played on for ducks.

Chris Gayle made 63 not out but none of the West Indies captain's colleagues could stay with the left-handed opener long enough to mount a serious chase as Sri Lanka won with 14 balls to spare.

Dilshan decided not to employ the 'Dilscoop' shot where he flicks the ball over the wicket-keeper's head and settled for more orthodox strokes.

"Now we've one more match, hopefully I can stay strong. I think I'll keep the paddle for the final," Dilshan explained.

Sangakkara, who said he expected something special from veteran batsman Sanath Jayasuriya in the final, added: "I have run out of superlatives for Dilshan. He is a pioneer stroke-maker in Twenty20.

"The best thing is that he understands his role and has become very responsible and mature. He has finally understood how good he is."

And as for Mathews, the captain said: "It's Mathews's first major international tour and you can't ask for much more than three wickets in the first over.

"Now we will take this confidence into the final against Pakistan."

Pakistan, who lost by just five runs to arch-rivals India in the inaugural 2007 World Twenty20 final in Johannesburg, are desperate to go one better this time.

The dark horses of this tournament, they have justified veteran coach Intikhab Alam's belief that they would be at their best when it mattered most.

"We want to make people back home happy," Pakistan captain Younus Khan said. "Winning the title will mean a lot to them and that will inspire us in the final. One more game and the World Cup will be ours."

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said: "You couldn't ask for a better final, they are two quality teams."

Default Pakistan skipper confident of winning T20 final

Pakistan skipper confident of winning T20 final

LONDON: Pakistan cricket captain Younus Khan voiced confidence ahead of Sunday''s ICC World Twenty20 final against Sri Lanka and said his players were determined to the end the tournament on a victorious note.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday at Lord''s prior to the team''s practice, Younus, however, reminded that Sri Lanka is a tough opponent and could not be taken lightly.

He said Sri Lanka has already beaten Pakistan in the Super 8 stage of the competition and described the team as a "balanced side" containing a number of outstanding players.

Khan said should Pakistan emerge winner, this would be their second major global trophy after the success in the 1992 World Cup. " Last time in South Africa, we failed to land the title by five runs," he said referring to defeat by India in the inaugural edition of theTwenty20 Cup.

The Pakistan captain termed his side as "underdogs" in the presence of such fancied teams as Australia, South Africa and India and said nobody could imagine that these outfits would be eliminated, leaving his side to advance to the finals.

He said the players have also been boosted by the telephone call from President Asif Ali Zardari and everybody was confident about the tomorrow''s game. Khan said a success would help him to realise his dream of winning a world cup trophy and bring smiles to the nation and specially the restive NWFP region and the people of his hometown of Mardan.

Responding to a question, he said his players are under no pressureand he feels very well about them.

Should Pakistan win, he said, he would dedicate the success to the memory of former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer who died in 2007 during the course of the World Cup in the West Indies.

Younus said he close to the late Englishman and missed him a lot as he had helped the players a lot.

Responding to another question, Pakistan captain said Twenty20 was a tricky game and any player on his day could turn the fortunes of the match as there is a great deal of element of luck.

Younus said he enjoys good friendship with a number of Sri Lankan players including captain Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralidaran and Mahela Jayawardene.

He spoke of the support the team enjoys in England because of the large Asian population and also among the locals because of the style of their play.

Khan said the terror attacks last March in Lahore has cost Pakistan cricket badly and a success tomorrow will lift the game tremendously.

"Given the fact that we had so little cricket in the recent past, reaching the final of the competition is a big achievement and we are determined to go out on a winning note."

Khan expects to field the same side that won the semi-final against South Africa saying that the team has no injuries.

He further said that now they have reached the final, they no longer take this version of cricket as "a fun game". "I take my cricket seriously and has a taint-less career so far."
