Razzaq cleared for Pakistan World T20 call-up
LONDON: All-rounder Abdul Razzaq was on Wednesday given the all-clear to replace injured Yasir Arafat in Pakistan's World Twenty20 squad, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed.
The 29-year-old Razzaq cut his ties with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) earlier this month and was cleared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play for the national team.
Fast bowler Arafat suffered a hamstring injury during Pakistan's 48-run defeat against England in their opening match on Sunday.
Razzaq, who played 46 Tests and 231 one-day internationals for Pakistan, joined the unofficial ICL as a protest against his omission from the squad selected for the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007.
The PCB barred all the 23 players who signed for the rebel league from domestic and international cricket as the ICL was not recognised by the ICC and Board of Control for Cricket in India.
However, all but two of Pakistan's ICL players had their bans suspended by the Sindh High Court in February this year.
Razzaq said he was delighted at the prospect of playing for Pakistan again.
"I am very happy and if given a chance I will do my very best for the country," he said.
The ICC said in statement that confirmation was conveyed to the PCB on behalf of the event technical committee.
"The ICC has confirmed the event technical committee of the ICC World Twenty20 2009 has approved Abdul Razzaq as a replacement player for Yasir Arafat in Pakistan's squad for the tournament," said the statement.
Pakistan's next match of the tournament is on Friday against Sri Lanka at Lord's.
Twenty20 WC moves into Super8 round today
KARACHI: The Super Eight round of ICC Twenty20 World Cup is kicking off today.
Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their opening match of the Super Eight tomorrow at the Lord’s of London. Abdur Razzaq would play from the Pakistani side in place of injured Yasser Arafat; he was allowed by the ICC technical committee.
Australia, Bangladesh, Scotland and the Netherlands have all departed the World Cup following the group stages. The eight qualifiers are divided into two pre-determined groups, E and F.
Group E is made up of the top seeds from groups A and C and the second seeds from groups B and D, with the reverse in Group F. Each country plays three Super Eight games.
West Indies and Ireland take the seedings of the departed Australia and Bangladesh. The top two from each group progress to the semi-finals.
The first match will be played between the teams of Ireland and New Zealand and the second one to be played between England and South Africa.

South Africa skittle England for 111 in Super-8

Owais Shah was the lone Englishman to withstand the Proteas'' onslaught with 38 off 33 balls after four of the top seven batsmen managed only four runs between them.
All the six bowlers used by South African captain Graeme Smith were among the wickets, with left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell grabbing three and Jacques Kallis and Roelof van der Merwe two each.
England, electing to take first strike in good batting conditions, crashed to 25-3 by the sixth over in an inspired display by the South Africans in the field.
Openers Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright were dismissed by the second over and Kevin Pietersen, who made 19 of the first 25 runs, was caught superbly at mid-on by van der Merwe off Albie Morkel.
The over ended without Morkel conceding a run, the first maiden over of the tournament, but Shah made amends by taking 14 runs in three balls from the 12th over bowled by spinner van der Merwe.
England captain Paul Collingwood put on 53 for the fourth wicket with Shah before he was bowled by Kallis for 19 to make it 78-4 in the 13th over.
Van der Merwe finished his spell with two wickets in his final over as James Foster fell to a low catch by Morkel before Dmitri Mascarenhas was bowled four balls later.
