Federer, Murray reach 3rd round in Madrid
MADRID: Former world No. 1 Roger Federer and U.S. Open runner-up Andy Murray were second-round winners at the $5 million Madrid Open.
Federer, a 13-time major champion, defeated Swede Robin Soderling 6-1, 7-5. Defending champion Murray beat Italian Simone Bolelli 7-6 (11-9), 6-4.
Federer, five-time U.S. Open champion, won the Madrid tournament in 2006 and was the runner-up in 2007.
Murray, who has won three tournaments this year, beat Frenchman Gilles Simon in last year''s indoor Madrid finale.
In other fixtures, world No. 8 Fernando Verdasco beat former world No. 1 and fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-2; Croatian Ivan Ljubicic beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-5.
