Default Pakistan lose ODI series 0-3 to Sri Lanka

Pakistan lose ODI series 0-3 to Sri Lanka

DAMBULLA: Mahela Jayawardene hit his first one-day century in two years as Sri Lanka thumped Pakistan by six wickets on Monday to grab a winning 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

The former captain made 123 and shared an opening stand of 202 with Upul Tharanga (76) as the hosts cruised past Pakistan''s challenging 288-8 in the 47th over of the high-scoring match.

Sri Lanka, who had won the preceding Test series 2-0, made light work of an improved batting display by Pakistan in which teenager Umar Akmal led the way with 66 off 65 balls.

The 19-year-old, whose elder brother Kamran Akmal is the team''s wicket-keeper, propelled Pakistan to the highest total ever at the Rangiri International Stadium.

But Jayawardene, opening the batting in place of the indisposed Sanath Jayasuriya, and Tharanga gave Sri Lanka the perfect start in good batting conditions.

Jayawardene hit 14 boundaries and a six in his 11th one-day century and his first since making 107 for Asia against Africa in the Afro-Asia Cup in Chennai in June, 2007.

Left-handed Tharanga helped himself to nine fours, before both batsmen fell in successive overs.

Sri Lanka lost a third wicket in the space of 10 runs as Thilan Samaraweera gave Saeed Ajmal a return catch, but Thilina Kandamby (32) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (37 not out) steered Sri Lanka home.

Pakistan lost despite putting up their best total in the series after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field.

Kamran Akmal made 45 during a 71-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Younus Khan (44) after opener Nasir Jamshed had fallen in the second over.

Pakistan suffered a middle-order slump when three wickets fell for 27 runs, before an aggressive Shahid Afridi helped Umar add 41 for the sixth wicket.

Afridi had smashed 32 off 20 balls with five boundaries when he was bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan.

The off-spinner, the world''s leading wicket-taker in both Test and one-day cricket, also bowled Umar soon after, the delivery after being hit for a six.

Pakistan plundered 86 runs in the last 10 overs to compile the highest total at the venue, surpassing Sri Lanka''s 282 against India in 2004.

Cricket: Pakistan’s first victory in SL tour

COLOMBO: Umar Akmal smashed an unbeaten 102 off 72 balls as Pakistan won the fourth one-dayer by 146 runs on Friday to record their first win on a dismal tour of Sri Lanka.

Umar''s maiden international century and a dogged 89 from skipper Younus Khan lifted Pakistan to 321-5 after the tourists elected to bat in the day-night match at the Premadasa stadium.

Seamer Rao Iftikhar then grabbed 5-30 as Sri Lanka were shot out for 175 in 36.1 overs, handing Pakistan a badly-needed win after they were beaten 2-0 in the Test series and lost the first three one-dayers.

The fifth and final match will be played at the same venue on Sunday.

Umar, 19, younger brother of the team''s wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, pounded four sixes and five boundaries in only his third international and was declared the man of the match.

Younus stayed rock-solid at the other end as Umar punished the wayward Sri Lankan attack during a fifth-wicket partnership of 176 runs after Pakistan slipped to 130-4.

Sri Lanka appeared to make light of the daunting target when they moved to 101-1 in the 16th over, before losing their last nine wickets for 74 runs.

Left-handed opener Upul Tharanga top-scored with 80 off 89 balls and skipper Kumar Sangakkara made 39, but none of the other top order batsmen delivered.

Spinners Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal supported Iftikhar with two wickets each.

"It''s a relief to win finally," said Younus at the presentation ceremony. "We are normally slow starters, but we have been too slow on this tour.

"Hats off to Umar and Iftikhar. They really made us proud today."

Sangakkara said a target of 321 could not be chased without big partnerships, which Sri Lanka did not have.

"I don''t think complacency was the problem," he said. "The problem was we gave them 320. We have got to make sure we bowl a lot better to our fields.

"Umar finished things off very well for Pakistan. But we need to keep our chins up and come back strongly in the next match."

Earlier, Pakistan made a sound start as Imran Nazir, playing for the first time in the series, hit 23 in a first-wicket stand of 61 with Kamran Akmal by the 10th over.

Kamran then put on 45 for the second wicket with Younus to lift Pakistan to 106-1, before another middle-order collapse saw three wickets fall for 24 runs.

Leg-spinner Malinga Bandara, himself making his first appearance in the series, bowled Kamran and trapped Misbah-ul-Haq leg-before to finish with two for 44 in 10 overs.

Lasith Malinga went for 79 runs in his 10 wicketless overs, while fellow paceman Thilan Thushara took two wickets for 74 runs.

Sri Lanka rested three frontline bowlers, Muttiah Muralitharan, Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando, and replaced them with Ajantha Mendis, Bandara and Malinga.

Pakistan were forced to leave out the injured duo of Umar Gul and Abdul Razzaq and also dropped Nasir Jamshed and Fawad Alam.

They were replaced by Nazir, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah and Iftikhar.

    Umar’s brilliant 102 helps Pakistan plunder 321-5

COLOMBO: Young batsman Umar Akmal’s brilliant maiden ODI hundred, his brother Kamran Akmal’s dashing 57 and captain Younis Khan’s magnificent 89 helped Pakistan pile up a huge score of 321 runs for five wickets against Sri Lanka in the fourth One-day International (day/night) here on Friday.

Winning the toss, Younis Khan decided to bat and his decision proved right as his batsmen took full advantage of the batting wicket of Premadasa stadium.

Imran Nazir, playing after a long time, opened the innings with Kamran Akmal and both provided a solid start of 61 runs before Imran got out for 23.

Later, Kamran completed his third half-century and also 2,000 runs in One-day International career. He made 57 from 64 balls with seven fours.

Then, Mohammad Yousuf and Misbah-ul-Haq were dismissed quickly for 6 and 9, respectively.

Now, Umar Akmal joined his captain and both were playingstrokes easily all over the ground. Umar was looking more aggressive.

Younis reached his 36th ODI fifty and soon Umar completed his second successive fifty in his only third one-dayer.

They added 176 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Younis departed in the 49th over for 89. He hit only four boundaries.

However, Umar Akmal completed his maiden ODI hundred in the final over and remained unbeaten on 102, his first century in his third One-day International.
