PESHAWAR: NWFP Minister for Sports, Culture and Tourism, Syed Aqil Shah on Tuesday inaugurated the ‘Umar Gul’ road in honour of the fast bowler’s achievements for the country, specifically his performance in the Twenty20 World Cup which Pakistan won.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Gulberg, Peshawar cantonment and was attended by the elite of the city, the father, brothers and other family members of test cricketer Umar Gul.
Speaking on the occasion, the Sports Minister said that NWFP had a rich tradition of producing talented and gifted players, who had brought great recognition for themselves and the country in the world of sports.
He referred to the matchless contributions of squash legend Jansher Khan, Mohib Ullah Khan, Qamar Zaman, former Hockey captain Qazi Mohib, test cricketers Arshad Khan, Pakistan capitan Younis Khan and many more.
He said the small gesture by the NWFP government to name a road after Umar Gul will encourage more sportsmen in the province.
Later, he formally cut the ribbon to open the Umar Gul road.
