ICC: New Zealand v England today
JOHANNESBURG: England will take on New Zealand in ICC Champions Trophy match today.
Geo Super will live broadcast the match at 06:30 PST.
This is 3rd match of the tournament between New Zealand and England; however English team has already qualified for semi-final.
It is New Zealand''s turn to do or die. A victory will take them through to the semi-finals, but a defeat will almost certainly see them heading home. England, though, can already think about the knockout stage after their slick performance against South Africa. This tournament continues to confound, and what excitement that has brought.
New Zealand produced an outstanding performance against Sri Lanka to keep their tournament hopes alive. It was typical of them to bounce back so impressively after a heavy defeat against South Africa. There was grit, determination and no little flair as they out-gunned a talented Sri Lankan team that haven''t found their top gear in this tournament. They might still survive, but need England to do them a favour.
Daniel Vettori''s team often lift themselves at global events and if they don''t make the semi-finals it will be something of a surprise - they are almost always there. However, their hopes have taken a blow with Jesse Ryder ruled out of the tournament after the injury he picked up during his destructive 58-ball 74 against Sri Lanka and his departure leaves a hole in the top order. But Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill have shown good form and it is up to them to take the strain. The captain, too, is leading from the front and his bowling spell was crucial to defeating Sri Lanka.
England, for their part, won''t want to take their foot off the gas. Having waited so long to find winning form in one-day cricket it would be careless to let it slip now. There are also areas to tighten up on despite two hefty victories. In both games the support bowling for James Anderson - especially from his fellow quicks - has been lacking with Stuart Broad particularly culpable of pitching too short. They also dropped two catches against South Africa - one by Paul Collingwood, the other by Owais Shah - and although neither cost them the match those types of mistakes will eventually be punished.
NZ win toss, put England into bat
JOHANNESBURG: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and decided to field first against England in the last match of Group B in the ICC Champions Trophy here at the Wanderers Stadium on Tuesday.
New Zealand made two changes as Hopkins replaced Ryder and Butler replaced Tuffey while Sidebottom comes in for Onions for England.
AJ Strauss (captain), JL Denly, OA Shah, PD Collingwood, EJG Morgan (wk), RS Bopara, LJ Wright, SCJ Broad, GP Swann, JM Anderson, RJ Sidebottom
BB McCullum (wk), MJ Guptill, LRPL Taylor, GD Elliott, NT Broom, GJ Hopkins, JEC Franklin, DL Vettori (captain), KD Mills, SE Bond, IG Butler.
Kiwis elected to field first vs England
JOHANNESBURG: New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first against England in their clash on Tuesday at the Wanderers in the final Group B fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy.
Dismissed with the West Indies as tournament no-hopers, England made 323-8 against hosts South Africa Sunday to become the first qualifiers for the semi-finals of the mini-World Cup.
It was the highest tally so far in the one-day extravaganza, eclipsing the 319 made by Sri Lanka in the opening match en route to a surprise victory over South Africa.
"That batting performance was the best I can remember from England. Owais (Shah) took control, clearing the boundary so many times, well backed up by Paul (Collingwood) and Eoin (Morgan)," boasted skipper Andrew Strauss.
"We can play the shots because of skills practice. The only problem sometimes is our mindset, whether we loosen the shackles and go out there and take the game to the opposition."
Shah, 98-run catalyst of the second highest Champions Trophy innings after the 347 posted by New Zealand against the United States at The Oval five years ago, echoed South Africa-born Strauss.
"The Australia series was not good for our batsmen. Coming to South Africa our confidence was low. We needed to go out, play with freedom and express ourselves."
New Zealand also smashed the 300-run barrier Sunday against Sri Lanka, amassing 315-7 to win by 38 runs. Another victory against England will take them into the knock-out phase of the four-million-dollar tournament.
However, if the ''Black Caps'' lose at the 30,000-capacity home of South Africa cricket, hyper-erratic Sri Lanka will cling to second spot on net run rate and squeeze through.
England have been the revelation of the second most important national team ODI tournament after the World Cup, outplaying Sri Lanka and a South African team ranked number one in the world within 72 hours.
They and Pakistan are the only countries never to have lifted the Champions Trophy since its introduction 11 years ago and a 6-1 series thrashing from Australia preceded the flight to Johannesburg.
New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori finally saw his batsmen click against Sri Lanka, but 74-run lead scorer Jesse Ryder has been ruled out of the tournament by a hamstring strain.
Lady luck has jilted the Kiwis, who choose from a limited base, as bowler Jacob Oram also had to return home early through injury and has been replaced by James Franklin.
Vettori shrugged off the blows: "At least we hold our fate in our own hands. If we defeat England we reach the semi-finals and if we lose we go home. We are ready."
After worrying about an inability to build partnerships, New Zealand concerns now centre on fast bowler Shane Bond, whose 9-0-82-0 figures Sunday followed an almost equally unflattering return against South Africa.
1-2 changes likely against Aussies: Younis Khan
CENTURION: Captain of the national cricket team, Younis Khan has said here on Tuesday that one or two changes may be made in the team for the group match against Australia.
Talking with Geo News, he said that Pakistan wants to continue the winning trend and the team would play according to game plan against Australia.
Replying to a question, he said that he wants to rest Imran Nazir for Pakistan’s last group match by the team management wants him to play.
Kiwis get 147–run target from England
JOHANNESBURG: New Zealand restricted England to a total of 146 in their clash on Tuesday at the Wanderers in the final Group B fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy.
England were all out in 43.1 overs.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first.
England collapsed by NZ for146
JOHANNESBURG: England batsmen failed to make any big score and the entire team was bundled out for 146 runs in 43.1 overs against New Zealand in the last match of Group B in the ICC Champions Trophy here at the Wanderers Stadium on Tuesday.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and put England into bat in overcast conditions which were fully exploited by the Kiwi seamers.
Only four English batsmen could get into double figures as their captain Andrew Strauss was their only batsman to get a duck.
For New Zealand, Grant Elliott captured four for 31 and Sahne Bone got three for 21 while Kyle Mills, Ian Butler and Vettori took one wicket each.
New Zealand have a chance to get into semis by defeating England who are already through to the semi-finals.
New Zealand brought in quick bowler Ian Butler for Daryl Tuffey, who has returned home with a broken hand. Opening batsman Jesse Ryder is also injured and New Zealand recalled Gareth Hopkins in his place.
