Federer defeated in U.S. open final by Del Potro

NEW YORK: Juan Martin del Potro dethroned five-time defending champion Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to capture the US Open on Monday, ending an era to win in his first Grand Slam final.

In the final played for four hours and six minutes, Del Potro won the second and fourth set on tiebreaker, but in the fifth and last set he had completely overpowered the world number one Roger Federer.

This was not the only upset win of Del Potro, but in the semifinal also he had defeated the world number two Rafael Nadal in straight sets.
