Goatees are so named because they resemble the beard of a billy goat.
Goatees had their place in history - Buffalo Bill, Lenin, Freud, the finger-licking Colonel Sanders. Satan is often pictured with a flourishing goatee and there is some speculation that this is because his image is based on the half-man, half-goat, Greek god named Pan. In Elizabethan times, it was worn by the smart set - the courtiers and scholars, and Sir Walter Raleigh. Flemish painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck did a series of portraits in the 17th Century of men wearing goatees. In 19th-Century Paris, goatees thrived as a badge on the chins of poets and painters in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Then came 'Gen X'. Followed by Hollywood. Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis, Spike Lee.


Robert Downey, Jr. is often seen sporting a Balbo. This is a variation of the goatee, except the mustache and goatee are not connected. The goatee is shaped to form an upside down letter "T" and can be worn sans mustache.

There are four basic types of goatees:

T HE TRADITIONAL
Most people will recognize the Traditional as "the goatee". The Traditional gets its name from the fact that it is a traditional goatee, mainly a mustache and the half beard. Most goatee wearers start with the traditional and find that it suits them fine. Others start here and venture on into one of the other types. It really depends on the person wearing the goatee.

T HE IMPERIAL

The Imperial is for those of us that cannot grow mustaches (or the ones that we can grow are those cheesy little pimps 'staches). It consists of just the half beard - no mustache. Where the name Imperial comes from is still a mystery, some believe that many ancient rulers actually wore this style of goatee.

T HE KLINGON
While the Klingon is really a derivation of the Imperial (see below), it has acheived its own fame and status as a type due to the fact that, according to Star Trek, an entire race of beings has this type of goatee. The Klingon differs from the Traditional in that the wearer shaves a small swath down the middle of the mustache, creating a middle bare lip area.

T HE STRIPE
The Stripe is for the most daring of us. It is just a small patch of hair on the chin that may or may not extend up to the bottom lip. While in no way connected with the gremlin of the same name, one can see a small connection. One last note on this type of goatee, it is the one most likely to come in different colo
