    Kamran droped for Asia Cup

Talented, young wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed replaced out-of-form Kamran Akmal as national selectors named twenty probables for the Asia Cup tournament here on Thursday.

The selection committee, headed by Salahuddin Ahmed, also announced that a short training camp will begin in Karachi from Friday after which a final 15-member squad will be announced on Sunday. “We have decided to check some new players in the camp. Therefore, the (final) team will now be announced on Sunday,” Salahuddin told reporters after the meeting.

The omission of Kamran had been on the cards after his poor show with the gloves in recent months although the selectors clarified that he had been given a rest. “We wanted to give him some rest since he has been playing non-stop cricket for the last four years,” said Salahuddin.

“Kamran is still our first choice as wicket-keeper but hopefully after taking a break and playing some domestic matches he will be in a better shape to perform his duties,” he stated.

Asked why was Kamran not rested against lowly teams like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh which toured early this year, the chief selector responded that his (current) form in the Bangladesh tri-series and earlier in the IPL clearly showed that the wicketkeeper-batsman required a break at this stage.

In the tri series, Kamran remained off colour with the bat, scoring just 49 runs in three matches but managed to hold six catches. Earlier, in the home series against Bangladesh, Kamran had scored 222 runs in four innings and held 10 catches.

“We selected Sohail Tanvir and Misbah-ul-Haq for the Twenty20 World Championship — a high-profile event — and they both performed well. We hope that Sarfraz will also excel in the Asia Cup as he has enough talent,” said Salahuddin.

Sources close to Kamran, however, told Dawn that he was anticipating the decision of his removal, especially after the PCB Chairman had pointed out his weaknesses in an e-mail sent to the team manager Talat Ali in Dhaka last week.

Kamran’s ouster, however, is likely to force Captain Shoaib Malik or Shahid Afridi to open the innings or include an extra bowler in his place. But Malik, who reached Lahore last night from India, said it was premature to say that he would open the innings. “Kamran’s expulsion is a unanimous decision and I have been taken into confidence on it. But at the moment I am not in a position to say that I will open the innings,” Malik stated.

“We still have to shortlist the selection to final 15 and then to the playing eleven. So every option can be considered with the team management before each match. Therefore nothing is final,” the captain added. “We also have Nasir Jamshed, a regular opener, in the side who can open the innings with Salman Butt.”

Meanwhile, Salahuddin said as India had a good number of left-handed batsmen in their line-up, the selectors had decided to call up more spinners including Saeed Ajmal and Mansoor Amjad, besides Fawad Alam. However, left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman could not get the selectors’ nod.

Though Yasir Hameed, Mansoor Amjad, Abdur Rauf, Saeed Ajmal and Naumanullah are included in the list of probables, they have little chance of selection in the 15-member squad.

The players will assemble on Friday at the National Stadium, Karachi to have the first training session at 3pm.

Probables: Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Sohail Tanvir, Sarfraz Ahmed (wicket-keeper), Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz, Nasir Jamshed, Yasir Hameed, Bazid Khan, Naumanullah, Mansoor Amjad, Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rauf.

Pakistan include uncapped spinner in Asia Cup team

KARACHI: Pakistan have included uncapped spinner Saeed Ajmal in their 15-man squad for the Asia Cup starting here Tuesday.

The 30-year-old, who has performed well domestically, was praised as a quality off-spinner by chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday.

"Saeed Ajmal has impressed with his wicket-taking ability and can also bowl one which goes out like former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and we hope he does well in this tournament," Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters.

Pakistan Thursday axed their specialist wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal from a provisional squad of 20. Akmal's place went to newcomer Sarfraz Ahmed.

Pakistan take on Hong Kong in the opening Group B match of the six-nation Asia Cup here on Tuesday. India is the other team in the group.

Bangladesh meet United Arab Emirates in Lahore on Tuesday in Group A, which also includes defending champions Sri Lanka.

Squad: Shoaib Malik (captain), Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Younus Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul Haq, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Rao Iftikhar, Sarfraz Ahmed, Sohail Tanveer, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Saeed Ajmal, Mansoor Amjad.

Giants battle for Asia Cup title

KARACHI: Title holders Sri Lanka and former champions India and Pakistan will be locked in a three-way battle when the continent's prestigious Asia Cup cricket tournament starts here on Tuesday.

All three Asian giants are missing frontline bowlers but still look the only contenders to win the six-nation event, which also features Bangladesh and qualifiers United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

Sri Lanka, winners of the title three times, are without Lasith Malinga who has been injured since March, and Farveez Maharoof who suffered a side strain on the eve of team's departure for Pakistan.

Four-times champions India are badly depleted in their bowling attack with Zaheer Khan and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth injured, and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh serving a five-match ban on discipline charges.

A groin injury has also ruled out their star batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

Pakistan miss Mohammad Asif who returned home after a 19-day detention in Dubai on charges of possessing illegal drug and faces an internal inquiry.

His pace partner Shoaib Akhtar is serving an 18-month ban over discipline
    violations.

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said it looked a three horse race.

"Asia Cup traditionally pits India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan in a three-way battle and although conditions in these countries are the same, we have slight home advantage," said Malik, whose team beat India to lift a tri-series in Bangladesh on June 14.

The win, Malik feels, gave Pakistan a confidence boost.

"We are high on spirits after the tri-series win in Bangladesh but we have to play well to cash on to that," said Malik, whose country is hosting the event for the first time since its inception in 1984.

Pakistan have won the Cup once, also in Bangladesh in 2000.

The hosts take on Hong Kong here in a Group B match on Tuesday. India is the third team in the Group. On the same day Bangladesh meet UAE in Lahore in Group A, which also has Sri Lanka.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the super league where each side will play each other to decide the July 6 finalists.

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene said he hoped his team could overcome a slump in form which has seen them lose four of five one-day series since finishing runners-up to Australia in the World Cup last year.

"We have not been in the best of forms in the last few months, but this is another opportunity to show what we are capable of. The fact that we are defending champions makes this competition even more special," said Jayawardene.

The islanders brought their dashing left-handed batsman Sanath Jayasuriya back after leaving him out of the West Indies tour earlier this year.

Turning 39 next week, Jayasuriya will supplement Sri Lanka batting which lacked aggression in recent matches.

In Muttiah Muralitharan and puzzling Ajantha Mendis, Sri Lanka have two quality spinners -- a fact Malik admires.

"Sri Lanka have two very good spinners who can be useful on our pitches," said Pakistan captain.

India have recently done well, beating world champions Australia in a tri-series in February. They crushed Pakistan by a record 140 runs in the tri-series in Bangladesh but looked overconfident before losing the final.

Bangladesh face a tough task of beating giants to harbour any hopes of reaching the final. They are without their two top players in Aftab Ahmed (finger injury) and Shakib Al Hasan who opted out due to exams.

The UAE and Hong Kong hope to gain experience by competing against the stronger opponents.

The two minnows qualified for the Asia Cup after UAE beat Hong Kong in the final of the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Trophy in 2006.

Minnows Hong Kong take on Asian powerhouses

KARACHI: Minnows Hong Kong know they have little hope of beating their opponents -- India and Pakistan -- in the Asia Cup starting here Tuesday, but they are still delighted to be at the event.

For them the six-nation tournament provides welcome exposure and experience to prepare players to win future competitions more suited to their standard.

Cricket is a long-established game in Hong Kong, which first staged an international match in 1866, but the former British-ruled city has never troubled the sport's top table.

Hong Kong coach Aftab Habib admits they are up against the odds.

"We are a very small team but this Asia Cup gives us an opportunity to know where we stand against bigger teams and it is a huge stepping stone for us," said Habib, a former England Test player.

Habib, who took over as coach 10 months ago, hopes his team would learn from the experience.

"I am honoured to be associated with Hong Kong cricket and by now have got to know the boys well and the goal for me is to take them further," said Aftab.

Like most of the Hong Kong players, Habib has roots in Pakistan, where some of his family still live.

Captain Tabarak Dar was born in Mirpur, Pakistani Kashmir, and is excited to play in Pakistan.

"Pakistan has a great cricketing culture and it's exciting to play here," said Dar, who hopes his team is not labelled as "cricketers on holidays."

"We are not here on holidays, we want to give a serious competition to the stronger teams like Pakistan and India and we are capable of doing that," said Dar.

For Dar the Asia Cup will serve as practice for the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Trophy to be held in Malaysia from July 25.

"Straight after the Asia Cup we have the ACC Trophy, so we are looking at it as an opportunity to play against bigger Test nations and show the world where we stand here and then in the ACC Trophy," said Dar.

Hong Kong were beaten by both Pakistan and Bangladesh to bow out of the Asia Cup held in Sri Lanka in 2004.

Pakistan open Asia Cup with hopes for future

KARACHI: Pakistan and Bangladesh both face minnows as the ninth Asia Cup begins on Tuesday, with the hosts hoping the event passes smoothly to pave the way for more international cricket in future.

Pakistan face Hong Kong in Karachi while Bangladesh play the United Arab Emirates in the first round. Defending champions Sri Lanka and India are the other teams in the six-nation event which runs until July 6.

The Asia Cup serves as a dress rehearsal for Pakistan's hosting of the eight-nation ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy in September.

Several foreign teams, led by Australia who postponed a Test and one-day tour to Pakistan in March-April this year, are considering a boycott of the Champions Trophy over safety concerns.

Pakistan has been hit by political upheaval and a wave of suicide bombings in the past year, which have claimed more than 1,000 lives, although the violence has tailed off in recent months.

However, if Pakistan stages the Asia Cup without any trouble then foreign teams will be left with little choice other than to take part in the ICC event.

The ICC last week gave Pakistan the all-clear for the September tournament but said it will continue to monitor the situation.

Pakistan, which is staging the Asia Cup for the first time since its inception in 1984, is confident of a positive start to the competition.

"We are confident that if we play tough cricket we can win the competition," said captain Shoaib Malik ahead of his team's Group B match, adding that the match against arch rivals India on Thursday will be the key to reaching the final.

"We will take it match by match. First up is Hong Kong and we don't want any let ups in that match which we should win without any discomfort," said Malik.

Hong Kong's English coach Aftab Habib said his side would remember the Irish feat of upsetting Pakistan in the World Cup held in the Caribbean last year.

"Cricket is a funny game and we should remember there were lots of upsets in the 2007 World Cup so we must give it our best to upset Pakistan," said Habib, who played two Tests for England in 1999.

In Lahore, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful is eyeing a spot in the second round with a win over the UAE.
"Our first target is to get a place in the second round so we should play quality cricket to beat the UAE and then focus on the bigger game against Sri Lanka," said Ashraful.

For UAE they have no choice but to try to upset Bangladesh.

"We have prepared well for this competition and know that the only chance to reach the second round is to beat Bangladesh," said UAE captain Saqib Ali.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the super league where each side will play each other to decide the July 6 finalists.
