    8 8 2008 12900 l - ~!~ Olympics 2008 ~!~

BEIJING: The Beijing Olympics 2008 has been declared open amid a colourful ceremony, which was promised to be a spectacular Olympic opening gala, here today.

The three-hour show at Beijing's iconic "Bird's Nest" national stadium is being attended
by many international personalities including Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and President of the United States George W. Bush.

With the beginning of the greatest show on earth the world’s dream will come true as athletes from 205 countries will compete for 17 days to win 312 medals.

The mega event has begun at 8:08 pm, on the eighth day of the eight month of 2008 -- a tribute to the number eight that many Chinese deem lucky as it represents prosperity.

On this occasion, more than 10,000 performers showcase the nation's ancient history
and its rise as a modern power before an audience of 160,000 people.

The opening ceremony has been marked with spectacular performance of acrobatics, cultural shows and enormous fireworks display across the city.

As China claims the history will view the 2008 Olympics as a significant milestone in the country's remarkable transformation.

Olympics: Medals’ race to kick of today
BEIJING: Saturday sees the first full day of Olympic competition in Beijing following Friday''s spectacular opening ceremony, with the honour of claiming the first gold medal of the 2008 Games set to go to the winner of the women''s 10 metre air rifle event. China''s reigning champion Du Li will be under pressure to retain her title and so give the hosts an ideal start in their quest to top the medal table. Seven golds in all are up for grabs on Saturday, with China''s world champion Peng Wei a strong contender for gold in the day''s other shooting discipline, the men''s 10m air pistol. But Wang Yifu, the coach of China''s shooting team, said double gold on the range was far from a foregone conclusion. Judo also has two golds, in the women''s 48kg and men''s 60kg classes, on offer on Saturday. Most eyes mat-side will be on Japanese heroine Ryoko Tani, the seven-time world champion, who is aiming for a rare third straight Olympic gold medal. If successful, Tani will become only the fourth woman to achieve the feat after Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina, and swimmers Dawn Fraser from Australia and Hungary''s Krisztina Egerszegi. In the men''s 60kg event, some of the leading contenders for places on the podium could be knocked out in the early stages. Austria''s European champion Ludwig Paischer is on course to clash with Britain''s Craig Fallon, the 2005 world champion, in the second round with Dutch world champion Ruben Houkes placed in the other block. Cyclists in the men''s road race will grab a quick glimpse of the Great Wall of China but won''t have much time for sightseeing on a 245 kilometre course which, combined with the heat and humidity in Beijing, not to mention the pollution, promises to provide a grueling endurance test. The biggest threat to Italy''s reigning champion Paolo Bettini is set to come from Spanish star Alejandro Valverde. Podium places are also due to be decided in the women''s sabre fencing competition and the 48kg women''s weightlifting class. Beijing will also catch its first glimpse in the evening of US swim star Michael Phelps as he opens his multi gold medal campaign in the 400m individual medley.
