Aussies record easy win against Kiwis
NAGPUR: Defendinging champions Australia overpowered New Zealand by seven wickets for a 25th straight World Cup victory in a dominant display here at the Vidarbha Cricket Ground on Friday.

Australia's fast bowlers, with Mitchell Johnson taking four wickets, led the way as New Zealand were bowled out for just 206 with nearly five overs of their innings left.

Left-armer Johnson finished with four for 33 and Shaun Tait three for 35.

That New Zealand even had the remotest chance was down to a battling fifty from Nathan McCullum and skipper Daniel Vettori's 44 with the duo combining well in an eighth-wicket stand of 54.

The Black Caps had earlier been in dire straits after their top order collapsed to 73 for six against the quicks from 66 for two.

Australia finished on 207 for three with a mammoth 16 overs to spare with Michael Clarke (24) and Cameron White (22) the not out batsmen as Australia also won the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.

Australia openers Shane Watson and Brad Haddin were rarely troubled during a century first-wicket stand.

However, Watson, on 10, did successfully challenge an lbw appeal from seamer Tim Southee, originally upheld by Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena, after replays showed the ball would have missed leg-stump.

Haddin, a fluent strokemaker, brought up his fifty in 39 balls with eight fours while Watson went to the landmark in 52 balls including a six off a Nathan McCullum off-break.

New Zealand's day appeared to be summed up when substitute Kane Williamson, at deep mid-wicket, dropped Watson on 59 off left-arm spinner Vettori.

But the Black Caps gave themselves a glimmer of hope when 133 without loss became 136 for two when fast bowler Hamish Bennett removed both openers in the space of three balls in the 19th over.

Haddin (55) hooked a looping bouncer to James Franklin and then Watson (62) inside-edged an intended square-cut onto his stumps.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting meanwhile could only manage 12 before he was brilliantly stumped down the legside by Brendon McCullum off Southee.

In a match played out against the backdrop of the Christchurch earthquake, Ponting won the toss and chose to field in overcast conditions.

Tait, following the economical Brett Lee, was erratic but removed dangerman Brendon McCullum for 16 when an attempted carve over the covers flew straight to Jason Krejza at third man.

Jesse Ryder hit six forceful fours but Johnson took two wickets in four balls in the 14th over to have the left-hander and Franklin edging to wicketkeeper Haddin as they both pushed limply at good length deliveries.

Tait then had Scott Styris caught behind for a duck and yorked Ross Taylor, who struggled to make seven off 22 balls.

One concern for Australia coming out of this match though would have been the way Nathan McCullum milked rival spinners Krejza and Steven Smith -- whose combined 18 overs yielded just one wicket for 91 runs.

Nathan McCullum top-scored for the Kiwis, completing a 72-ball fifty including three boundaries before he was lbw to Johnson for 52.

Australia's Bollinger out of World Cup
    <TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=6 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD>
NAGPUR: Australia fast bowler Doug Bollinger has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a left ankle injury and is returning home, it was announced on Friday.

"Doug Bollinger has been experiencing increasing left ankle pain since arriving in India," Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a statement.

"Unfortunately the pain is now significantly affecting his ability to bowl and he will not be playing any further part in the tournament.

"Doug will now return to Australia and seek specialist opinion to determine the best course of management for this injury."

No decision has yet been made about a replacement for the New South Wales quick, who took one for 29 in a warm-up match against India.

Bollinger was not selected for Australia's opening win of the tournament against Zimbabwe or the reigning champions' ongoing second match against New Zealand in Nagpur on Friday.

Australian selectors will decide on a replacement player and this will be announced once approved by the International Cricket Council's technical committee.

    Doubts over Akhtar, Malinga
ColomBO: Pakistan are hoping that Shoaib Akhtar will unleash his pace on Sri Lanka on Saturday (tomorrow) even as the maverick fast bowler spent most of the time on the sidelines during a marathon training session here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Thursday.
Akhtar bowled five overs in Pakistan’s 205-run triumph over Kenya on Wednesday and the visitors are hoping that he will spearhead their pace attack in the more important game against the co-hosts.
But the pacer was mostly seen inactive as other pacers — Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq and Junaid Khan — had a tough work out during the four-hour training session.
It was inevitable that questions were asked about Akhtar’s fitness but team manager Intikhab Alam tried to quell all fears, saying that the pacer was fully fit and is set to feature in Saturday’s match.
“He is fine,” Intikhab told ‘The News’. “He may not be a hundred percent fit but you could see that he is still bowling pretty fast.”
Meanwhile, the news coming from the Sri Lankan camp suggested that their pacer Lasith Malinga might be losing his race against time.
Malinga missed Sri Lanka’s opening game against Canada and didn’t bowl in the nets here on Thursday.

Pakistan's worries begin with the fact that its openers did not click against a soft opposition in its tournament opener in Sooriyawewa. The start was too sluggish, the team lost too many wickets during the batting Power Play without much increase in scoring.

Coach Waqar Younis affirmed the team's faith in the openers and highlighted the past record of Ahmed Shehzad and said that he should not be judged on one match. On the performance during the batting Power Play in the last match against Kenya, he said: “When you lose early wickets, you get under pressure and then, you know, it takes a while to build up momentum…We will try to make sure that we do not repeat the mistakes we made in the last game.”

    R. Premadasa Stadium

    R. Premadasa Stadium (also known as Ranasinghe Premadasa Stadium or simply as the Premadasa Stadium) is a cricket stadium situated on Khettarama Road, Maligawatta, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The stadium was, prior to June 1994, known as the Khettarama Cricket Stadium and is today one of the main venues in which the Sri Lankan cricket team play.
    Ground history

The inaugural One Day International was played on April 5, 1986 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. On August 28, 1992 it hosted its inaugural Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia. The venue is best remembered for holding the world record for the highest Test total - 952/6 declared by Sri Lanka against India in 1997/1998 in which former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340 and Roshan Mahanama 225, the pair sharing the highest partnership for any wicket in Test cricket with 576 for the second wicket. Since that record-breaking match, it has hosted just one Test against New Zealand. Invariably flat, the pitches are slow in pace and low in bounce.

A new training center has been developed behind the stadium with 16 practice pitches and dormitories for the Sony Max Cricket Academy which started in 2003.
    One Day Internationals
1- The highest ODI total is 363/5 by India against Sri Lanka on February 03, 2009.
2- Sanath Jayasuriya has scored 2514 runs and is the highest by a single player at the Premadasa stadium. Marvan Atapattu, Aravinda de Silva, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Sachin Tendulkar has scored more than 1000 runs.
3- Muttiah Muralitharan with 69 scalps has captured the most number of wickets at the Premadasa stadium.
The highest individual score at R Premadasa stadium is 150 by Gautam Gambhir against Sri Lanka in the 2008-2009 season.
