Hafeez backs 'strongest attack in the world'

Muhammad Hafeez the Pakistan allrounder, has backed his team to come up trumps in the World Cup semi-final against India, who, he claimed, would be up against the "strongest bowling attack in the world". Pakistan's bowlers, led by Shahid Afridi, the tournament's highest wicket-taker, have set up wins for their team in six of their seven games so far in the World Cup.

"We believe that we have the strongest bowling attack in the world at the moment," Hafeez said. "That is the key. Our bowling is our strength and our batsmen are just supporting them in whatever way is required."

Hafeez, who bowls offspin, opened the bowling in Pakistan's quarter-final win against West Indies and is part of an attack that has shaped up to be among the most threatening this tournament. Umar Gul had been successful in the late overs, Afridi's variations have proved difficult to deal with, left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz and left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman have chipped in while Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Razzaq have also been effective. Shoaib Akhtar, who will retire from international cricket after the World Cup, is also waiting his turn in the knockouts.

"At the moment, we definitely rely on our bowling but we know we are capable enough as batsmen to achieve any total," Hafeez said. Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka in their chase to 266, faltered against New Zealand in their only defeat thus far in the competition, and stepped up against Australia and West Indies to bowl both of them out for under 200.

The surface in Mohali, the venue for the semi-final, has traditionally been favourable for fast bowling, though Hafeez said Pakistan were prepared for anything. "We really don't care about the pitch; whatever it will be, we are good enough to perform to the best of our ability."

Pakistan haven't played in India since 2007 and the build-up to this high-profile clash has been massive. "For me this is the best cricketing opportunity as an individual player, to perform in such a pressure game, the semi-final of a World Cup and especially Pakistan-India."

Pakistan have played India on four occasions in World Cups and have been beaten each time. History, though, mattered little to Hafeez. "Yes, Pakistan has not defeated India in the World Cup, but in the last 12 years, Australia also had not lost a single World Cup game. But then they lost to us (by four wickets) and to India.

"There is no point thinking about the past. We think about the day; whoever the opponent is, we try to win on the day."

Vettori eyes big finale for little guys

DHAKA: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori dismissed suggestions on Saturday that reaching the World Cup semi-finals should be the limit of his team's ambitions.

"I look at it as an achievement for a country so small that we make so many semi-finals. That's a better way to look at it for a country of four million people," he said.

"People may put negative stamps on it but I think it's an achievement for a country like ours."

New Zealand came from behind to upset South Africa by 49 runs in Friday's quarter-final at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium, their fourth win over the fancied rivals in six World Cup encounters.

Vettori's men, restricted to 221-8 after taking first strike in the day-night match, bundled out South Africa for 172 in an exciting finish.

It will be New Zealand's sixth appearance in the semi-finals, where they await the winners of Saturday's match between Sri Lanka and England in Colombo.

"I think the reputation we have is that we can beat any team on a given day," said Vettori.

"But consistency has avoided us a lot of the time, so it's our big chance in the semi-finals to go one or two better."

Vettori said beating South Africa in a crunch game boosted morale, and praised his side for fighting till the end.

"Something around 250 would probably have been a really good score, but we knew 221 was defendable and the way we bowled, and particularly the way we fielded, got us through to the victory."

"I think when we got de Villiers and Kallis out, we all started to believe we could go all the way, the captain said.

"Their top four batsmen have proved themselves for a long, long time and have an excellent track record. They also had a long tail. So we had to take wickets."

South Africa, often regarded as the best team never to have the World Cup, have lost in three semi-finals, two quarter-finals and once in the first round.

Smith the devastated captain ends it where it began
Dhaka is going to be to Graeme Smith what Paris was to Lynn Barber. Barber, now a British journalist and whose story inspired the movie An Education, was whisked off to the capital of France when she was fresh out of school by an older man. There she learnt about the joys, and the heartache, of adulthood. There, she let life embrace her and realised how much can be lost when that embrace is broken. The same happened to Smith in the Bangladeshi capital.

Smith started off his career as captain in Dhaka, during an ODI tri-series which also involved India. He was, in cricketing terms, not even out of school, having played the same number of ODIs as his age up to that point. Eight years later, he had just crossed the threshold into his 30s and was leading the team into what was supposed to be their defining campaign as World Cup contenders. It didn't turn out that way and when he walked out onto the Shere Bangla field for the quarter-final against New Zealand, he was walking out to play his last match as captain. It ended, as it had begun, in Dhaka.

It's been a memorable period for Smith who, self-admittedly, has lasted longer than most captains do. He has collected series wins over countries, both home and away, in almost as carefree a fashion as a little girl skipping along plucking flowers. It didn't start that way. Shortly after Smith took over, South Africa lost series to New Zealand and Sri Lanka away from home. It was the shaky period of his captaincy, when he still wasn't sure how to strike the balance between bullish and a bully.

As the years wore on and Smith matured, mellowed and moulded himself into a real leader, he was at the helm of South Africa's regular wallopings of Zimbabwe and West Indies. He also conquered Pakistan, England, India and even Australia.

Yes, even Australia. The 438 game which South Africa came out on top of was the closest Smith came to winning a final. It was the decider in a five-match series and after South Africa's bowlers had conceded 434, it looked as though it would be another final they could not win. Smith was part of the reason they did. He scored 90 and along with Herschelle Gibbs' 175, laid the platform for a famous win.

The true tests of his leadership came in more tense situations and although South Africa, the team, has not been able to overcome pressure in an ICC event yet, Smith the man has. One of his stand-out moments as captain came in the Champions Trophy 2009. South Africa were chasing 324 against England in a must-win situation and Smith, tired of all the ICC-trophy failures, decided that he would take them over the line himself. He blasted 141, while no other batsman managed more than 36. When Smith reached three figures, South Africa believed. He was their captain fantastic, who would bat with a broken hand if need be, and if he was there, all was well.

But when he fell, off a top edge, the end was in sight. He walked off the Centurion field that day to a standing ovation and when he acknowledged the crowd and the sky, with a tear in his eye, it was clear the team meant more to Smith than any hundred ever could. South Africa lost the match by 22 runs and bowed out of another ICC event without getting close to the silverware.

Smith was devastated; it was a devastation he came to know when he firmed up his spot in the squad, as a replacement for Jonty Rhodes in the 2003 World Cup, one that haunted his tenure as captain and was there again at the end. It is the inability to win a world title that will taint Smith's stint as captain of one of the best ODI sides in South Africa's history.

Still, Smith is not planning on disappearing from the ODI set up, and is available for selection for the limited-overs sides, both 20 and 50 overs. "I feel like I still have a lot to offer SA cricket. I am looking forward to carrying on as a batter and a senior player," he said. He has already performed the role of a senior player in the Twenty20 squad, which Johan Botha has been captaining since August last year, and said that he enjoyed being in the outfield and being freed of responsibility.

Smith's form in ODIs in the last 12 months has dipped. His average, since March last year, has hovered just above 30, a fair bit away from the 40 he usually has. In 2011, in 12 ODIs, he has averaged 28.25 and has struggled, looking scratchy at the crease. He hopes that without the captain's armband, he can work on his own technique and capitalise on his skills as his career reaches mid-life and then winds down. "Hopefully I can go away now and work on a few things and come back stronger in the later part of my career."

He believes that he leaves the role with South African cricket "in a really exciting period." Despite the disappointment of not winning in the knockout phase Smith said that players like Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir make for a strong South African future. "If they keep those core bases in place and allow these guys to really develop, there is an exciting period ahead. The bowling in particular, the emergence of spinners and Dale [Steyn] and Morne [Morkel] are going from strength to strength." The batting may still need some hardening up, which an in-form Smith can provide. Apart from experience at the top, Smith also hopes to be able to be the shoulder on which his successor can lean on. "I want to be a good support to the guy who gets the opportunity in the future."

Imran hints at India having an edge over Pakistan
    K
olkata: Former captain Imran Khan today hinted that India have an edge over Pakistan in the much-anticipated World Cup semifinal but said that past
history will have no bearing in the clash between the arch rivals.

Imran conceded that based on recent form, India are the favorites to win the World Cup. He also rates Mahendra Singh Dhoni as better captain than Shahid Afridi.

"Favorites not always win the World Cup. Home team has never ever won so far. But there is always a first time. Obviously I want Pakistan to win. But at the same time, if ever India had a chance. This is their best chance," said Imran.

"Recent form, recent track record, and they have a very balanced side. This is the best opportunity for the Indians to win the World Cup. Such are very rare chances and it`s a golden opportunity. It may not come in the next World Cup," he said.

Comparing the two captains, Imran said, "Dhoni got the advantage as he is the captain in all three forms. Afridi made a mistake by saying no to captaining Test side. Test match pressure is more than any other form”.

"If you don`t captain in Test cricket, it`s difficult to handle pressure in one-dayers. So Dhoni has a big advantage over Afridi," said the 1992 World Cup-winning skipper.

Pakistan have lost all their four earlier World Cup matches against India but Imran said they have the ability to break the jinx as the home side would be under more pressure at Mohali.

"There is an old saying that you only cross the river once. Purane cricketers beh chuke hain. Ab depend karega Mohali mein kya hota hai (It all depends what happens in Mohali, rest is past). Records are meant to be broken," Imran said.

"I am not trying to play mind games. But pressure would be more on India than Pakistan because of home conditions and the tag being favourites, which is a relief for us. It will depend which team handles pressure better. A team that has the killer instinct will win.

"Pakistan can come up with surprises which no one knows. They are completely unpredictable. Pakistan`s bowling is stronger than India`s but the hosts are a better side when it comes to batting," he said.

On a lighter vein, Imran advised the Indians to take sleeping pills on the eve of the clash.

"I advise Indian cricketers to take sleeping pills or else they would have sleepless nights," he quipped.
Imran said Pakistan would have been the favourites against India if the banned pace duo of Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif were with the side.

"They should have been punished before. But if they were there with the side we would have been the favourites and not India," he said. Imran was all praise for Sachin Tendulkar for maintaining top form after playing for more than two decades.

"Sachin is at the peak of his game. The combination of experience and his technique. With age you tend to have poor reflexes but he is made up with much better temperament. Sachin is formidable," he said.

He advised Pakistan team management to bolster the pace attack by including Shoaib Akhtar as Indians play spinners easily.

"If Shoaib (Akhtar) is fit then he should play. I don`t know the fitness status. If any team plays spin well that is Indian team. So I should go for the pace department. If I was a captain, I would have taken a chance (bringing Shoaib Akhtar)," he said.

He said Afridi should think of playing in-form batsmen higher up the order.

"Pakistan`s best batsmen are coming at No 4 or 5, they should bat at 3-4. It is much easier trying to avoid a pressure rather than playing without pressure. I don`t
understand the mindset of quality batsmen playing down the order. This could be Achilles Heel," he said.

"While chasing a total, if you lose wickets, run-rate goes up and it`s difficult to bat under those circumstances."

Imran is hoping that Afridi will also come good with the bat, after doing so well with the ball.

"It can be Afridi; so far he has failed. If he has one golden moment of 10 overs, it can make the match for us," he said.

Remembering about the pressure situation in 1987 series against India in India, he said, "It was a deciding Test in Bangalore and everything was shut down. If you multiply that by five times, that`s going to happen on Wednesday.

"When a match is of high pressure, things tend to even out because pressure plays a much bigger part. If some are highly talented, because of pressure they may not be able to perform. But other players who are not as talented will rise to the occasion. The more extreme pressure, great players become ordinary," he said.

Imran said dew factor could play a role in the day-night clash at Mohali.

"Afridi spoke to me before going to Mohali. He was especially concerned about dew and asked me when the dew falls and at what time. Dew can be a factor. That could make a big difference and then toss becomes crucial as bowling second becomes a huge disadvantage."
