Inzamam slams delay in naming World Cup captain
Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has said the delay in naming the captain of the World Cup squad has led to the creation of factions within the national side.

Currently Misbah-ul-Haq, who has seven half-centuries in his previous seven international innings, is the captain of the Test side while Shahid Afridi has led the limited-over teams over the past year. Under Misbah's charge, Pakistan drew a Test series against South Africa in UAE, in November, before winning the two-Test series in New Zealand. Afridi returned to the helm for the ongoing one-day series, with Misbah as his deputy, and Pakistan were thrashed by nine wickets in the first game, by a New Zealand side that was on a 11-match losing streak.

In the meantime, the selectors finalised their World Cup squad, but did not name the captain, making Pakistan the only team that is yet to identify its leader for the event.

Inzamam said the uncertainty was hurting Pakistan's preparations. "With only three weeks left to the World Cup, Pakistan have no captain and the blame goes to the PCB for creating an impasse which has divided the team into two groups, supporting Afridi and Misbah," Inzamam said. "In this scenario one cannot have high expectations for the team."

Inzamam was in charge of Pakistan during their disastrous 2007 World Cup campaign, which ended with a first-round exit after a loss to Ireland, which was followed by the sudden death of their coach Bob Woolmer.

"The PCB has failed to control the situation and if Pakistan fares badly in the World Cup, people will accuse the players and not the board."

The selection of the Pakistan's 15-man squad without consulting coach Waqar Younis or the captain also came in for criticism from Inzamam. "When a team is without a captain how can a proper strategy be made? The team is playing a one-day series in New Zealand but they do not know who will be their captain in the World Cup which is very damaging."

SC restores Geo Super rights for World Cup matches

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court in a brief order here on Monday has restored the rights of Geo Super television for showing the World Cup matches on cable network throughout the country.

In this regard, the Pemra notification of January 10, 2011 has been declared null and void by the Supreme Court restoring the earlier letter dated December 22, 2010 and ordered Pemra to implement it in its letter and spirit.

Now, according to this order, only Geo Super can telecast all matches of the ICC World Cup 2011 in the country.

Inspectors visit Indian World Cup venues
MUMBAI: Inspectors visited Mumbai's Wankhede stadium on Monday ahead of the cricket World Cup starting next month amid growing concern over delayed preparations for the six-week event.

The Wankhede ground in Mumbai, which has been completely rebuilt, and Kolkata's Eden Gardens are two venues attracting close attention from the International Cricket Council (ICC) inspection team.

Officials at the Mumbai Cricket Association confirmed the visit without giving further details, and the ICC team are due at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.

The World Cup, which is being hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, opens on February 19, with organisers rushing to overcome construction delays plaguing some venues.

The Mumbai stadium has undergone a two-year $55 million renovation in preparation for its first World Cup fixture on March 13. It will also host the final on April 2.

But a leaked report by the ICC last month noted problems with the stadium's floodlights, glass that reflected into batsmen's eyes, an incorrectly located the umpires' room and unsuitable anti-doping facilities.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata has major building work still to be completed before holding its first game on February 27, when India take on England.

Organisers of the World Cup have dismissed fears of a repeat of last year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, when many venues were badly delayed and scruffily finished.

"I am confident the ICC inspection team will be happy after the visit to Wankhede. They would have seen a miracle," ICC president Sharad Pawar, who also heads the Mumbai Cricket Association, said last week.
