‘United’ Pakistan can do well in Cup: Iqbal
KARACHI: Former Test cricketer Iqbal Qasim feels that even though there are no superstars in the Pakistan team, if they all contribute in the upcoming World Cup, they can do exceedingly well.
“One can say that Pakistan does not have the players to propel to a World Cup triumph,” Iqbal Qasim, who is also a former chief selector told PPI. “But as we have seen in the ODI series against New Zealand, they are capable of winning when they play as a unit.
“The team has the potential provided every player gives his best.
“If they all perform, Pakistan can prove to be the top title contender.”
He further said that the series triumph against New Zealand has boosted the morale of the players ahead of the World Cup.
“Beating New Zealand ahead of the World Cup is a good omen for Pakistan. This would help lift their morale before the important assignment,” he said.
“The players played well in the last three matches. They won three matches on the trot, which shows that they are coming back to winning ways. However, I would advice them that they should go all out to win the sixth and final match as well, with more vigour and record a big win. This would give them a psychological advantage ahead of the World Cup as they will go into the showpiece high on confidence.”

‘Lee can help Australia to another Cup’
MUMBAI: The form and experience of returning fast bowler Brett Lee can lead Australia to a fourth successive World Cup title, former captain Steve Waugh told Reuters on Thursday.
One of the fastest bowlers in contemporary cricket, Lee was forced to retire from Tests in February last year because of injuries but he has looked back to his best in the ongoing one-day series against England.
Lee, 34, is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 11 as Australia have taken an unassailable 5-1 lead ahead of their World Cup defence.
“I think he is an inspiration for the rest of the Australian team,” Waugh, who led his team to the World Cup title in 1999, said in an interview.
“What he has overcome to get there... fitness wise and through training... The way he has come back and is bowling at 150 kilometres per hour, he will motivate the players around him.
“And he loves touring India.” Waugh, 45, said there were no clear favourites for the February 19-April 2 showpiece event although he predicted India and SriLanka would be tough to beat on home soil.
“I wouldn’t say Australia are not going as the favourites. They will be one of the favourites,” he said. “They are still ranked the number one ODI side in the world.”
