Biography
Kareena Kapoor, the second child of Babita and Randhir Kapoor, younger sister of top Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, made her debut with J P Dutta's Refugee opposite Abhishek Bachchan, the son of legendary stars Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan. They were heralded as the pair of the millennium. What generated further curiosity was that the lead pair had chosen to make an unusual debut, one that did not cast them as childish teenyboppers losing their hearts out to each other! The film, when released fetched lukewarm response at the box-office, failing to live up to the expectations it had sparked off. But one person who walked away with the laurels from not only the critics but also the public, was Kareena Kapoor.
To maintain exclusivity, the actress has refused to entertain those filmmakers who offered her routine roles, right from the start. 'I'm here to do something different,' she claimed. Perhaps it was this attitude that made her walk out of Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai. (Or had Rakesh Roshan dropped her because of doting mother, Babita's, interference, one still really doesn't know.) Kareena Kapoor today has Satish Kaushik's Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, Santosh Sivan's Asoka with Shahrukh Khan, Subhash Ghai's Yaadein with Hrithik Roshan, Karan Johar's Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gam with Hrithik Roshan, and Sooraj Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon with Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan.
But what made the press push their pens were the three films that had Hrithik Roshan as her co-star. Was their relationship more than what met the eye? Kareena Kapoor cried hoarse denying it while Hrithik chose to get married to long time girl friend Suzzane Khan, daughter of Zarine and Sanjay Khan. But the day Hrithik was tying the knot on the outskirts of Bangalore, the print media went berserk writing stories about his and Kareena's lovey-dovey cootchie-coo sensation on their flight back to Mumbai from the outdoor shoot of Yaadein. Kareena claimed the stories to be sick and angrily retorted that she would never share her man with anyone, so there was no question of getting into married men.
Kareena also is known for her bold and brazen quotable quotes. She openly told the press that she would never ever work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali because he approached her for the role of Paro in his upcoming film Devdas and later ditched her for Aishwarya Rai without as much even informing her.
She also got into tongue lashing with Preity Zinta saying that Preity was no competition to her. With her mannequin face, pale complexion, laughing hazel eyes, coupled with talent she has the looks and the talent that could not only kill but also send man straight to heaven. (If you could tolerate the attitude bit, though.) That's Kareena Kapoor for you!
Memorable Roles
Refugee
It happened to be the biggest film of the year what with two of the industry's biggest stalwarts Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan's son Abhishek and Babita and Randhir Kapoor's daughter Kareena Kapoor coming together. Kareena Kapoor played a muslim girl who falls for a Refugee, Abhishek Bachchan. The character brought Kareena's talent to the fore.
Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gam
Pooja the Poo was just not forgettable. It had all the characteristic traits that a teenage girl has in her who also displayed the maturity of woman when it was needed. After the success of Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hian Kareena once again proved she was an actress to reckon with.
