Default Ministries to plan return of international sport

    From Abdul Mohi Shah
ISLAMABAD: The Sports Ministry plans to involve the Interior Ministry in an effort to chalk up a comprehensive security plan to revive international sporting activities in the country.
And Federal Minister for Sports Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani confirmed that efforts are on to restart international sports activities in the country.
“Secretary Sports Aziz Ahmad Bilour would soon meet his Interior Ministry counterpart to chalk up an effective security plan that could guarantee a return of international sporting activities in Pakistan,” he said.
Following a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore on March 3, 2009, international teams have stopped visiting Pakistan. Even major international sports events including the ICC World Cup 2011 were taken away from Pakistan.
“I think it is time that we evolve a security plan to restore the confidence of foreign teams,” he added.
Jakhrani also hinted that the Sports Ministry would stay with the Federal Government as Implementation Commission has agreed to the suggestions and concerns forwarded by the Ministry.
“We are confident that the Sports Ministry would stay with the federal government. The Ministry has recently forwarded some genuine suggestions that are being given a serious thought.”
Under the government’s recent devolution plan, the working of five ministries have already been handed over to the provinces. There are chances however that the implementation commission may not go ahead with the decision with the devolution of Sports Ministry.
“Since the Sports Ministry represents the unity of the country and as such are the custodians of national sports interest. The transfer of powers to provinces would disturb the system and unity of country,” a member of the Implementation Commission has recently told ‘The News’.
Jakhrani confirmed that there are bright chances that the Ministry would stay as a part of federal government.
Former world squash champion Jahangir Khan who also participated in the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Executive Committee meeting lashed out at recent controversies involving Jansher Khan and Aamir Atlas.
“It is more a controversy within the family. It has nothing to do with squash development. Sooner the federation gets out of the controversy; the better it would be for the game.”
Later the Minister distributed Rs 36.3 million among Asian Games medal winners. The recipients include hockey, snooker, wushu and kabbadi players.
