Sehwag ton flattens Deccan Chargers

HYDERABAD: Virender Sehwag destroyed Deccan Chargers with a blistering 119 to engineer Delhi Daredevils'' four-wicket victory in the Indian Premier League on Thursday. The Delhi captain, dropped twice, smashed 13 fours and six sixes in his 56-ball knock as his team chased down the 176-run victory target with one over to spare. Useful knocks by JP Duminy (55) and skipper Kumar Sangakkara (44) had earlier powered Deccan Chargers to a decent 175-5 but the day belonged to Sehwag, who toyed with the home side''s attack. Their fourth victory in 10 matches put Delhi on seventh place with eight points, ahead of Deccan who have six.

Kochi stun favourites Kolkata

KOCHI, India: A fine half-century by Eoin Morgan went in vain as Kochi pulled off a 17-run upset win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday to spice up the race for the play-offs in the Indian Premier League. Chasing 157, Kolkata were cruising at 69-0 but paceman Raiphi Gomez grabbed two wickets in two balls and Vinay Kumar sent back Morgan (66) and Yusuf Pathan in the 19th over to restrict the visitors to 139-7 at the Nehru Stadium. The victory moved Kochi to fifth in the points table and brought them back into contention for a place in the knockout rounds, while Kolkata remained in second place with 12 points. England''s Morgan impressed the most among the Kolkata batsmen, hitting eight fours and two sixes in his 51-ball knock after Jacques Kallis made 45 opening the innings. Kolkata paceman Jaidev Unadkat earlier struck a double blow after skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to field, dismissing opener Brendon McCullum (one) and Parthiv Patel (21) inside the first six overs. New Zealander McCullum was caught in the slips by Kallis and Patel top-edged to Rajat Bhatia, who ran backwards to latch on to the catch at the third attempt. Coming in to bat at number four, skipper Mahela Jayawardene (55) rebuilt the innings in the company of Australia''s Michael Klinger (29) with a 51-run stand for the third wicket. The former Sri Lankan captain hit two fours and two sixes in his 41-ball knock before being run out in the 19th over. Brad Hodge boosted the total with a late assault off the final over bowled by his Australian team-mate Brett Lee, clobbering two sixes and two fours to finish on an unbeaten 35 off just 19 balls. Two-ton Gayle makes IPL history

BANGALORE: Chris Gayle became the first batsman to hit two centuries in the Indian Premier League when he smashed a 49-ball 107 in Royal Challengers Bangalore''s 85-run win over Kings XI Punjab on Friday. The West Indies opener, who scored an unbeaten hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders last month, cracked nine sixes and 10 fours in a superb display of power-hitting to help Bangalore post a challenging 205-6. Bangalore, with Gayle taking 3-21 with his off-spinners, then restricted Punjab to 120-9 for their fifth win in nine matches of the Twenty20 tournament. Seamer Sreenath Aravind took 4-14. Punjab could never recover after losing four wickets, including those of hard-hitting Australians Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh, for 34 runs in the opening six overs. South African Ryan McLaren (28), Paul Valthaty (21) and Dinesh Karthik (20) were the main scorers in Punjab''s dismal batting performance. Mumbai currently lead the 10-team league table with 14 points, followed by Kolkata (12), Chennai (12), Bangalore (11), Rajasthan (11), Kochi (10), Delhi (eight), Deccan (six), Punjab (six) and Pune (four). Gayle went for big shots early in his innings, hitting Australian paceman Ryan Harris for two sixes in an over. His best came in the eighth over when he smashed two sixes and as many fours off seamer Praveen Kumar. The opener, who raced to his half-century off just 28 balls, dominated a 111-run stand for the second wicket with Virat Kohli (27) before falling in the 15th over, caught at deep mid-wicket off leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. South African AB de Villiers then hit an unbeaten 27 off 14 balls to help Bangalore cross the 200-mark.
